ok, do not use the bioballs or crematic rings. You can use the carbon and the sponge.

Most people make the back into a refugium, by adding a light and some live rock rubble and some chaetomorpha (a type of macro algae that is very useful in exporting nutrients)

Then other people use chemicals, such as chemipure, phosban and stuff like that.

Your sponges wil be the same way unless you clean them on a regular basis.I clean mine with water changes in old tank water

and i bought water from lfs.10/29

also 1 more thing with the aquqpod does any know anthing about the over flow box for aquqpod? there seems to be like filliter slits were the overflow box is .... is that good?

3 Gallons seems fine, you could do 5 gallons at a time too. Home Depot has 5 gallon buckets cheap and it makes it really easy to premix the water and store the buckets for your next water change. Just make sure to mix the prepared water with a powerhead and match your tank temp before using it. If you keep one empty 5 gallon bucket all you'd have to do is fill that bucket with your tank water and then put in the prepared 5 gallon water. 10 minutes max...(a little more prep time, but I seem to find an hour or so during the week when I have nothing to do). Not sure on your test kit, maybe the LFS can show you with their tank water?
