give it a try

I thought I'd give fraggin my shrooms a try. I've been thinking about it for a little while and decided I have enough now that I can spare a couple if it doesn't go well. I cut two shrooms into 5 pieces and put them in a tupper ware container with some shells and larger pieces of coral sand. I'll keep you posted.

If anyone has any advice for me please advise. One thing I'm a little worried about. The first one I cut off I didn't cut deep enough and the mouth is still attached to the original mushroom. So the fragged pieces doen't have any of the mouth. I guess I'm not too worried because I guess people have had success with the blender method.

The only thing i can say about this... is to be more in the safe side just cut them on half so bouth mushrooms have more chance to have a successful surgery  or also something that has fork for me on mushrooms i dont know if you have seen my orange/red shroom that everyone wants a frag! what i do is that i keep stressing it like touching it one's in awhile or putting something to irritate him like zoas or my yellow polyps so that's make him uncomfortable and moves away from were is located ... leaving behind pieces of legs! (i guess ) and they grow to be little cute babies.... so i do bouth irritate with finger and with corals sounds like a bad thing to do but better than being chop in half or more pieces...

KidNano - I never had to do surgery on my shrooms to frag them. They sort of just fragged themselves with time. You'd be surprise how fast they grow by just doing nothing. But I do look forward to seeing it's progress. :)

yeah i guess you can call me impatient. I've had one rock with 7 little red shrooms on it now for 4 months and I've finally just this week seen two little newbies. Also this was just a test. I've never fragged anything and i wanted to see if i could be successful. I've heard it's pretty easy. when i get home tonight I should have a pretty good idea if it was a success.

Ed: that is a beautiful mushroom. And since everyone else has asked i would love a frag as well. I live in Yorba Linda... I could cruise up to Long Beach no problem. I'll pick Jesse up on my way. :)

OK... it's been just about 48 hours.... I just pulled the tub out and took off the netting on top and to my surprise. Nothing has attached. The pieces have grown but have not yet attached.

Any advice. I was told it takes about a day for them to attach.

patience is the only advise other than your doing it the only way i know how. if they are still alive i would just leave them for acouple weeks.

depending on the shroom/tank/lighting/water q, it can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks to fully attach. for shrooms i have a tupperware that i just leave in a low flow area and throw them in there and leave them, by the time i think about them again there always attached

i'm thinking of creating a little area in my sump for just such a purpose. I have a pretty good PC light down there that would be fine for shrooms and other items. I'm getting sick of looking at the tupper ware in my main tank and It's disturbing my anemone and xenia.

Thanks for the input.

OK so it's been what 8 days now? All five pieces have turned into little mushrooms but only one has attached to a shell. The other 4 are still just hanging out, maybe looking for a better ride or something. hopefully they'll attach soon. I lost one of the two shrooms I fragged due to cutting too much from the rock. So as of now it looks as though I will be 4 up from when I started. As long as these four pieces attach. I'll post some pics next time. My daughter is up screaming like a banshee tonight so there's no time. I only have time to write this because my wife got out of bed to help me get her to relax so that she'll eat. infancy is an amazing thing. Heres hoping for some sleep tonight.

Here are the first three that successfully attached. only two left and then I would consider my first attempt to have gone as good as it could have. I'm already pretty excited that I've got these 3.

I know it's hard to see in this pic but all 5 pieces attached. I'm pretty happy that I was able to do it. I guess it's pretty easy after all. I'd almost say that it's not worth it though. Unless you've got a better set up then putting a bulky tupperware container in your main display. It'll be a while before I do it again.
