At the moment I dont have a picture to show so Im hoping someone can give me a place to start with and Id on this. Last night while cleaning my tank I noticed new growth on some of my rock. They are approximately 1/4" oblong and tan/brown color in the center. The outer part is a dark burgundy almost purple color and is fuzzy looking. Im assuming its from the live rock in my tank even though its growing on the dead rock. Any idea where to start with an id. Im assuming a type of algae but really have no clue

Hard to say without a pic, but the word fuzzy makes me think sponge. Of course it could just be a macro algae that's in an early stage of growth that I've never seen. Also coraline comes in a few different forms. Pics, pics, pics....

I have something kinda what you describing growing on my live rock, I'll take a pic of mine, and if it's the same, well, then we know :)

Does it look like this? If so, I think its a type of wafer algae and it can grow out of control. I've got some in my tank but I just pull it out with tweezers when I see it.

Thanks for the pic but nope thats not it. It looks sort of like a small Q-tip where the stem is brownish and the top is covered with a dark burgundy/purplish fuzz. I should be getting a digital camera shortly here so I will post a pic when I get it

I swear you are describing it like what I got, it looks like a fuzzy round mushroom kinda huh? that tip does look like a q-tip. I could have taken a pic yesterday to show up here, but I was trying to pull a ricordia through, which by the way died, so he went off to "flush heaven" I'll get it in tonight, keep an eye out.

sorry to hear about the ricordia. Well maybe I wasnt looking at the right spot in the pic the. It doesnt grow flat along the rock or round like a mushroom it grows more vertical with the fuzzy purple part mostly at the top. Of course the ones I have are fairly small so maybe it looks different when it gets bigger

Not exactly like that but very similar. The coloring is right. Its a little hard to tell from the pic do they open up on one side? Mine dont open up like a mushroom. They are solid. Taller than wide but everything else is the same as what you show. Maybe mine havent grown enough yet to look like that. I will check them again when I get home and see if they look any different. Thanks again for all the help

Yeah, you are right, they are not flat or open, they are more of a bubble or solid as you say. Looks like if you cut it, it would pop or something. It's real fuzzy. It's hard to say what it is, but doesn't seem harmful. I just noticed it grew out of nowhere

Dragon,

That is an odd looking growth. Get DJ or Incysor or Phishcy to giver there opinion. I've never seen that before.

I've looked at the pics, but I can't really tell what it is...If you can get some clearer pics, from a few different angles I can start looking.
Otherwise my suggestion would be to post the pics with a description asking for an ID under the 'Ask Dr. Ron' forum on RC.

more pics

here's a few more pics. It's hard to get a good shot, even with the tripod I got, just cuz it's not that big of a growth.

Unable to get from other angles as it's best shot from the right side, which are these shots. Hope these came out a tad better, so they help

I have no idea what that is. I've never seen that in my tanks. Must be just some kind of weird algae.

Interesting stuff. I've never seen anything like that either. Keep an eye on the growth rate and color changes if any. Post some new pics in a month or so.
