Hi Guys,

I want to Frag off some of my zoas to trade with other local reefers for new colorfull zoas.

I have no clue on how to d this and I don't want ot kill my Zoas.

How do you do that. Ca I just up the polyps out one at a time? Can I do it right in the tank? What can I stick them on after (I know when I buy frags from the store the are on some kind of sandy glue stuff)?

Thanks,

Eric

Sometimes you can just gently pull the polyps that you want to frag right off the rock...then you just super glue them to a small piece of rock.

Otherwise, cutting the tissue wont hurt these guys...just try to avoid cutting the actual polyp as Eddie mentioned.

Careful when you frag Zoos. I'd suggest gloves and glasses, they have a tendancy to squirt

Also, use the superglue "gel", it works better IMHO

Is there a particular way to glue? Do you just put glue on the rock then attach the Zoo? Or do you place the zoo then glue the outer portions of the zoo to the rock? Sorry to cut in Eric. Just wondering how t glue?

ok .... well you can use any kind of super glue but gel kind like ZAP SUPER GLUE GEL, LOCTITE GER FORMULA SUPER GLUE GEL OR CRAZY GLUE GEL.... in zoos there is 2 ways :

1. you can take the piece of LR were you are gonna place them and the zoos and try to dry the place and the bottom of polyp with a paper towel then add alittle bit to the rock and the bottom of the polyp and then put them together and let them dry some minutes then introduce them to the tank were is not alot of flow and then wait some hours and then put the frag were you want to place it......

2. you can take out the polyp and add some glue to the bottom and then put it to the LS or take some LS out so the polyp with glue will attach some sand on it with the glue like a mix of glue and fine sand ... let it dry couple of minutes then add more glue to the sand glue of the bottom of the polyp creating another layer of glue then place it in the piece of lr and let it dry for couple of minutes or you can doit inside the tank but you will have to press the coral to the rock for few seconds and no flow so it will paste... I would break the rock to frag zoas whenever possible. Peeling them off the rock can be dangerous. I had a fellow hobbyist frag many of his zoa colonies (he has a ton) by peeling a few polyps off each colony. By doing so he cut up a lot of various polyps and ended up becoming violently ill and devloped a wicked looking rash on his whole right arm. Overall its just much safer to break the rock.

Most live rock is fairly soft. One thing I do when the zoos are growing on live rock, is to take a sharp knife (wide flat end blade Xacto works very well) and just gouge out the rock beneath the zoos that I want to remove. Can't do this all the time, but if your rock is soft enough, you can relocate them with little distress. Just put your super glue gel on the bottom of the rock chip that you move.

The rash could be an alleregic reaction but some zoas also contain palyotoxin which is serious stuff. Good handwashing is definately required and glove and eye protection are also highly recommended. If you develope problems like the ones posted on make sure to tell the doctor that you may have a palyotoxin exposure, this isn't somehing they see often enough to recognize without the tip.
