Flowerpot - Dying?

We have had a flowerpot in our new nano reef for about three weeks now.

After a recent "shake up" trying to find and capture a hitch hiking crab, the flowerpot doesn't seem to be doing well.

I have read some of the other articles here about other flowerpot issues, but mine doesn't seem to be the same.

He hasn't been "open" in about 5 days. A few of his arms will come up about 1/4 of an inch, but nothing like before the shake up where he would be all arms out and swaying in the current. I don't recall him getting injured per se, as I have read that if the meaty part of them gets damaged they can die from that. He just seems really pissed off right now.

Also this morning we noticed a slight wispy something or other coming from one of his arms.

It seems like he might be dying, but I am not sure what to do. Can a LFS help?

Advice?

First off, welcome.

Secondly, Im sure you ahve read that these corals are one of a few that will die for no known reason. Due to your stated circumstances, I would say that this coral is just "ticked off". As long as you dont see the tissue receeding from the skeleton, it should be fine. Try to just let it be, dont bother it, keep a close eye on it, and maybe post a pic or two if you can.

Hope this helps,

It looks bothered more than dying from the photo. If any type of critter is walking around it or touches a tentacle the end result is what you are experiencing.

They are also very sensitive, to salinity swings and any other change like temps. If the coral is left alone, if healthy he will come around back to his original state in a day or two.

If however, you start to see slothing of tissue around any part of the coral; he is dying and there is nothing you can do to turn it back. He will die in a couple of days as the disease spreads from one tentacle to the other.

Hopefully that is not the case and he will pull through.

He is near the front of the tank and our Skunk Back Cleaner Shrimp hangs out in this area and may be irritating him. I'll see if moving him else where helps.

If he does indeed start to die, what should be done to prevent him from "affecting" the tank?
