Flow

My tank came with no information or specs on the pump. I have no clue how much water is flowing in my tank. It looks like enough, but I really don't know. I have some Zoanthids that came with my live rock and they seem happy. my two little fish are getting moved around by it.

What is appropriate for a 12.5 gallon?
I'm interested in a SCWD. is it a good idea? Not necessary? seems the easiest way to get alternating currents.

I'm definitely going to start investing in frags to get some color.

well you want your tank volume to turn over about 10-15 x's an hr so you want at the bare minium 200 GPH flow rate in your tank with more being ideal helps keep everything suspended. I havent really heard any bad things about the SCWD devices other then they really cut the flow down on a pump but I really dont see how I was actually considering one for my 46 gal bow front. what are you using for flow in yourtank now ? filter,Ph ect...?

I'm using the stock power head that came with it. There was absolutely no information about it in the box. www.aquaeurousa.com . There is no information on their website either. I've e-mailed them a few times and have recieved no response. I'm going to pull it out of it's hole tonight and to see if it has any info on it. As far as filter.... I took out the bioballs, the ceramic rings and the carbon bag and replaced it with Chemi-pur and live rock. I left the sponge in the first chamber that came with it.

I was looking at the Tunze Nanostream that Jesse posted on another thread. it said it would work from 11 gallons up. Would that be good for me? I'd like to keep what ever I use out of the display area of the tank but I want the best flow I can get which is why I was thinking of an SCWD as well. :???:

This question is for all who want to share their great ideas with me.
what kind of set up would you go with if you had a 12 gallon :?: with cost not being an issue. for soft corals and once I get some experience SPS.

your probably only getting around 150-200 gph from the stock pump which gives you a turn over rate of 16 x's an hr which isnt bad flow and should be fine for almost all softies but once you get into sps most like at least 20x turn over so your either going to need to up grade that pump or put something as far as a PH or something in there I know you want to keep everything out of the display but your talking about getting into some high flow loving corals so you might need to make some small sacrifices down the line for your stocking plans there are plenty of PH and pumps out there that would work great in your situation one to look into would be this:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/P ... 22788+2035

even if you were to go with the 400 gph an hr one that would bump your turn over up to 48x's an hr plenty of flow for anything you would want to keep plus that particualr pump doesnt give you direct flow like a normal PH would its spread out a little more so its not pounding on one specfic spot plus its cheaper then the nanostream and tunze pumps plus I have heard only good things about them. its just an option plus its magnetic mount lets you move it almost anywhere and you can rotate it 360 degrees so thats also a plus something you cant do with most normal PH anyway just my .02

I'm amazed at how cheap the "Hydor Koralia Water Circulation Pump" is. That's quite a name too. I'll probably look into something like that then.

Just for clarification though. That pump doesn't replace the pump in my filter right? it just sits in the tank and circulates in the display?

Thanks.

Other opinions welcome as well.

yeah its a form of a PH it goes in the display but you can stick it way up in the back corner and point it where ever you want and its not as forceful as PH are thats what makes it nice you get the water movment of a PH with out the parting sand storms.

yes.... those oh so powerful sandstorms. It's so irritating when you get the rocks set up all perfectly and then I bump the flow director and it blows sand all over everything.

My wife agreed to let me spend a few hundred bucks on my tank when I sell my crotch rocket. 2003 600RR Anyone interested. I think I'm gonna go with the 150watt K2 Viper HQI light and one of these pumps and then get some frags.

Then it's all about sitting and peering through the glass at that tiny little ecosystem.

Thanks.

if you go with the viper get a 15k or a 20k bulb because the 10k's are really white and wont bring out the color in your corals as much where as the 14-15k or the 20k are much bluer and give you a little more coloring in everything I believe jesse use the 14k phonix bulb in his although I am not sure and I have a 20k in mine but with the atinics it makes it a little to blue so thinking about going with the 14-15k myself but being the viper doesnt have atinics then I would try the 20k just my .02
