Oh, gotcha. Yes, I'm aware of it. I'm the owner and administrator for a PNW Scuba Diving forum and work directly with forum software all the time.

But, back to Reef Tanks.

Did anyone check out the "Finnex" products or have first hand experience with them?

OK... here is a REALLY stupid question. Regarding ACRYLIC tanks. Have they gotten any harder to scratch in the past 12 years?

Seriously.

The only disadvantage to the Finnex I can see at this point is the fact they are made of acrylic. (cringe) I always swore if I did this again I would get glass. Glass, I tell you!!! And now here I am considering plastic (acrylic) again.

By the way, they are adding a real wood (oak) stand to their inventory instead of the MDF. I'm not certain which tank this is for, I am guessing the 35 gallon unit. MUCH nicer, IMHO.

That is a pretty nice looking stand.
Acrylic is still as easy to scratch as it ever was. That being said there are some inverts and fish you want to stay away from like urchins, I have heard abalone (not that they are nano candidates in the first place), and aggressive fish like triggers can all eat away at acrylic. I saw a clown trigger at a LFS attacking the glass on a tank, when I asked some of the staff about himm they told me he was a trade in that destroyed a 300 gallon acrylic tank. With that in mind plus the fact that eventually coralline algae will have to be scraped off, IMO acrylic tanks are not the best choice for a reeftank. There are some tanks with similar lines made out of glass but I don't think they are as large as the ones you are looking at. I don't recall the brand right now but will post it later if I remember it. HTH, Skip

Wow I really like that stand that is furniture quality . I went with a tall night stand for our tank I know what you mean about the elcheepo wood looking cheesy the stand that I got dosent look to cheepy . I also agree with what skip said we got rid of all the acrylic for the reason of scratching big time glass scratches too but not as easy .....

I've stayed away from acrylic tanks because I know I'll scratch them up.

But I've known lots of people that manage to keep them clean without doing so.

I agree that the wood stand looks much nicer.

Welllll... Want to hear something totally hilarious?

I had earmarked $1500 for my aquarium project. I had cash in hand. Well actually, in the small safe located in my home office. I left said safe open the week before Christmas, because I was getting in and out of it so often for my business, I just got a little lazy.

I guess the babysitter had been watching. I went to get the money out yesterday, and it's gone. Every last penny.

So... now the police are involved. Insurance doesn't cover cash losses (understandably) and I think the chances of seeing that money back from her are slim to none. So, While I will continue learning about marine aquariums here, doesn't look like I will actually own one any time soon.

What a way to ruin the holidays.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year, everyone.

sorry to hear of your loss
is it a minor or an adult that babysits?
If it is a minor I would go to the parents and get them involved.
Was there any sign forced entry ?
wow that sucks I hope that you prosecute to the fullest extent of the law . What about small claims court ?
I say fry him/her!!

I thought I had bad luck! Hopefully you will recover at least some of the money. At least this gives you even more time to plan ot your dream tank. Skip

She's an adult. Like I said, I left the safe open, so she didn't have to force anything. The worst part is she has been in my home helping to care for my 3 1/2 year old son for 9+ months. He adores her, and this is such a colossal betrayal of trust - it pretty much has us all numb. Plus, I just received paperwork from the court demanding garnishment of her wages for a prior check fraud problem. She was supposedly a student last semester, but I called the local university today and she actually is not.

I keep wondering what the next terrible surprise will be.

Thanks for the thought, Skip. But the only place I will ever see that money again is in my dreams. Sadielynn, I'm with you. If I have anything to say about it, she is going to jail. Soon. I don't think small claims applies, because this is a criminal matter. Besides, as mentioned above, getting the judgement might be fairly easy, but collecting can be a whole different ballgame.

I might be learning a lot from all of you, but learn something from me. If you hire someone to work in your home, check all references, get a credit report and definitely do a criminal background check.

Even tho it is criminal and a criminal court can demand restitution , you also have a civil case tou recoup some of your loss , I do believe that a judgment stands for up to 10 years . Translation you can put a lein on property , car(s) home or paycheck you have more than the criminal alley to take should you choose to do so , if you win then she is responsible for court costs period . I think that if you can get a lawyer to advise you on your avenues that you have believe me you have more than one . Keep us posted and good luck

Right... but this girl is (well, not really I found out) a 21 year old college student. She *has* nothing. Trust me, I will be exploring all options. I won't throw good money after bad, but I'll try to recoup.

Thanks to Chris from nanocustoms for all the great continuing information.

Looks like they (Finnex) will be producing a GLASS 20 gallon soon. He said "February-ish" he doubts the 32 gallon will be available in glass due primarily to shipping issues.

Also there will be an upgraded Dual 70w MH light system which may (hopefully) include moon lighting. That will be coming early February. Dunno if this is interesting to any of you, but I told him I would pass it along.

I really like it when they add more options to the choices we already have. The main thing about the Finnex tanks I didn't like was the acrylic construction. Thanks for passing that on. Skip

Hey if nothing else it is giving me a huge amount of time to read this website and some books and magazines I have picked up on the subject.
