fire shrimp

i'm assuming since your question was posted in the Houston Reefers section that you live in the area. I was in Aquarium World on the Northwest Freeway this past Friday looking for Emerald Crabs, and they had a brand new shipment of fire shrimp for $20 each. That sounds a little steep, but as far as I know that's the cheapest around. i'm holding out for an anenome shrimp at the moment, but if i wasn't i would have gotten one, they looked healthy and happy.

I went over to Aquarium World last night, partially because $20 for fire shrimp is a good price for this town. I also had a 20% off coupon, and needed a lawnmower blenny. They only had 2 fire shrimp and they were $29ea. This is about $4 more than most other places in town, so I skipped em. The 20% would have brought it down to the regular prices of the rest of the LFS. I paid $9, (nearly double the $5 that I normally pay), for a yellow clown goby. They fed the tank brine and this one ate, so hopefully it won't be #4 in 3 months. I also picked up a red-headed goby for $29, which is $10 more than I paid for my last one I found in Austin. I wouldn't have gotten it, except I haven't seen these fish at any other LFS in town. Their coral prices were mostly stupidly expensive as usual. One of the most ridiculous things I saw were the $89 crocea clams. Everyone else it town has them for $35 up to $50 for really nice ones. I just don't understand why people would pay prices like this.
My LM blenny was $19, which again was $4-$5 more than I've normally paid for them. They also had several larger LMB for $24, which is just silly. I really like going to this store to look, but their prices usually keep me from buying anything, unless I can't find it someplace else.

That sucks. I was there Friday, talked to an employee named Summer, she told me that they had just got a shipment of fire shrimp in, and she'd give me one for $20. The price on the glass still said $29, i just figured they hadn't changed it yet. i'm in there quite a bit despite their high prices, don't know what it is, it just seems more professional than any other place around. i guess maybe she gave me a discount, i'm in there about once every 2 weeks, and any weekend i leave campus, but she never did tell me that's what it was. I just figured $20 was the price cuz of a new shipment. maybe they were all bought up, so they raised the price back up for the last couple???? don't know. sorry if i caused any cofusion and/or trips to Aquarium World for nothing........my fault.

incysor/djconn,
i'm only in town 2-3 times a month now, wasn't keeping reefs in high school 2 years ago, when i still lived in Houston, so i guess i dont really know any of the cheaper stores around. Aquarium World has been the only one i've purchased from.
What stores do you two usually buy from?? Where are they located?? I'm right outside the Spring/Tomball area, any close to me??

Don't sweat the shrimp price. I've never had anyone at AW come down on any price that's listed on the tank. Needing the blenny, having the coupon, and it being 6:30, was my main impetus for going to them. The shrimp would have just been a nice bonus.

This is a thread that posted awhile back that has the various stores in town and my opinions of them. There is at least one store that I didn't list on purpose. They only have a handful of SW tanks, and everything in the store is filthy and unhealthy looking. I've heard of a couple other stores, one near Galveston, and one in Baytown. I haven't heard great things about either store, just that they have a few SW tanks and are convenient to folks in those areas. So this is a MOSTLY comprehensive list of the stores in Houston. As for closest to you, you pass Aquatic World on your way to Aquarium World. If you exit Jones as you come into town and take a left under the freeway it's about a mile or so up on your right. If you continue up Jones for another 3-4 miles and take a right on FM1960 there's another store B&B on your left about 2-3 miles.

If you go right on beltway 8 you go past I-10, to beechnut/bellaire, and you've got City Pets, and Global close. At Hwy 6 and bellaire you've got T&T, if you go out there, you might as well go to Fish Land, they're on Westheimer, nearly to Hwy 6.

Sorry, work has kept me busy this morning. Aquatic World has more stock, but I have ended up buying more stuff from B&B. They seem to get stuff in that other's don't have, and their prices are a bit better.

I've had 2 fire shrimp. They were in the same tank, and both were very skittish and shy. They mainly came out at night. Does anyone else's come out often. I'm not sure I'm gonna spend $25 on another one if it's just gonna hide in the rockwork all the time.
