Honestly, I dont know how that works (except for the protein skimmer) since I really havent used one yet nor have I seen one in person. But based on the craftsmanship, its very clean. I do envy your workshop. I've always wanted to have a workshop with hundreds of tools....for now my workshop is a slab of wood placed on a coffee table in the living room.

Very nice...and clean. Hope it works out for you.

I like the workshop as well. I'd be scared to see what Master Er would come up with in a shop like that.

I see that this is an older post but I am curious as to how well the design has worked out for you? Anything you think you would do different or change if you were building another one today?

actually it works awsome........i got it right the first time. the filter floss you see in the pics was only there for the clear up period, then they where taken out. the box with the bio balls in it still has the filter floss and balls. only used 30bio balls so it didnt over filter the system. next one im going to build is going to be bigger for more water volume. ill try to get some pics posted soon. thanks again for the revisit.

Check out the date of the last post.

Info in this hobby has changed dramaticly in the last 10 years.

There are a few things that remain reliable.

Deep Sand Beds, lots of in tank flow, good lights, ect.

People used to throw chemicals in their tanks only a couple of years ago, now we know that most of the products don't do squat.

A very true statement about the change of info.

Bio balls are not *bad*. Actually they are quite good at their job, to house bacteria that process various component of the nitrogen cycle. The big issue I have with them is that they do this job too quickly and lead to a rapid increase of nitrates. I prefer a slower process where my clean up crew has the chance to eat left over food and waste so that less is processed into nitrate. FOWLR bio media is fine as the fish are less sensitive to nitrates.
