DIY skimmer

just wondering if anybody has built there own protein skimmer?

i get board sometimes, i have to much time on my hands, and i like to build my own stuff (or at least try to). my next project is going to be a skimmer. i have done a bunch of research but really havent found anybody that has done there own. just curious.

my first skimmer was built out of PVC plumbing parts I had laying around the house. I modeled it after some of the venturi models of the time and used a MJ with an air tube diffuser as the pump. It worked fine, but Now I own two manufactured ones and that one is in the scrap pile :)

how did it work?

i have a bunch of different sized clear acrylic tubing here from when i used to install custom car stereo's. i think im going to make one soon. its not going to cost me anything so i figure what the hell...cant hurt. i have everything here to do it. when i start ill keep a photo record of everything i do. ill post everything when im done.

i can't take full credit for the design though, i got the idea off of either nano-forums, or reef central, and kinda designed it to work with my tank.

it skims extremely well, you can adjust the color of skim by how much air you put in, so by using the adjuster on the air pump, i get a nice dark skim out of my 15gal system

i think im going to make one myself just for something to do....the one i have now is just to big for my ten. its not that big of a deal, its just something to do when im bored

that one shown is running on my 10gal, the total water volume is around 15gallons though, since it has a 10gal sump underneath the display, filled halfway.
