Dragon I just busted my swing arm meter (the 5th one since starting) is this just as acurrate as a refractometer ?? :mrgreen: also is that what you use as "law" for your readings ?

Sadie, it's supposably the best thing out on the market for accurate readings, so I bought it :) My bro has a refractometer, but when he came down to visit, he just loved the handheld tester!

Go towards that and ditch the swing arm inaccuracy to the curb as I did! :)

Steven,
I bought one of these great little units a little while back but I can't figure out how to change the temp from C to F, do you have any idea? I have found nothing in the manual that tells how to change it either. Skip

Here's the online manual. But the manual, and the brochure both just say that it measures in Fahrenheit. It doesn't mention Celsius at all. I looked all over and couldn't find anything anywhere that mentions that it'll read in C.

Here's a quick online converter.
http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/temperature

Or here's your basic math conversion to get F from C, where C=27

F = (9/5)C + 32
F = (9/5)27 + 32
F = 80.6

Is it possible that you've been turning it on and pushing the mode button before putting it in the water, thereby getting a ppt reading?

I am sorry I didn't get back to you, hectic evening, but as you can see from incysor, that manual is correct. And just by guessing, you might have been looking at the PPT reading.

I just orderd the one on Ebay
My next question is did Mike find it comparable with the refractometer that he has ? :) from what I can tell is seems to be the same thing

congrats Sadie. To compare, one is digital, and you see the results as you dip. The other, you drop a drop of water, and that drop tells you what your gravity is at when you look through it like a telescope.

The one you purchased has more options. (gravity, PPT, and temperature) That's all I can say with the differences. You'll be pleased nevertheless

Sadie,

I'm a digital freak, so I would prefer the digi-lab. At the time I was in the market for salinity tester, the refractometer was only available.

So I puchased the highest model they had, which came with a built in light. It will read gravity and PPT but will not take temperature.

They are extremely accurate and would only be off if it was not calibrated. Calibration is easy and once you do it you virtually leave it alone, I haven't had to recalibrate mine for 1 year.

With the digi-temp just dip it in your tank and instant results, I'm not sure though about how often you need to calibrate as I did see some solution in Dragons post.

That is the same company I purchased mine from. I am satisfied with mine with the exception that I still haven't figured out how to change the temp to farenheight. I wear glasses and my refractometer was hard for me to read after taking them off, with this I just dip and read. Even if it only read specific gravity I would say its a good buy. Skip

Yeah you must have a different model. Take a picture of it. The box, the manual, the unit front and back......something has to be different from the one I have.

I messed with it, but I could see no way of chaning it from Celcius....just by default only Farehnheit.

Here is the insert that was with it along with the directions. As previously stated the directions do not say anything about switching between F and C. If you will look below where it says 3 in 1 it says that it reads both F and C. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Skip
