Cycling my 12G

Here's the Nano Cube I've been waiting on, I finally put the live sand, live rock, and water in there...Tell me what you think of the aqauscape and how it looks. I'm wondering whether I should keep the light on (a normal day/night schedule) or should I just leave it off during the cycling process? What should I do with the output, should I leave it how it is or attach that Y-connector (seen below)? Any suggestions or ideas for me...?

Very nice, I like the aquascaping! You can leave the pumps on and the lights off. The pump on will help settle the sand. There's really no need to leave the lights on as there isn't anything that you need it for during the cycle.

Nice tank! Cool rock work!

What are you going to put in when the cycle is done?

ok in my experience with the Y conector the gph of the pump lowers alot so you might consider a stronger pump than 2006 model and also i just change my Y conector with a hydor flo and im liking alot but that's just me no one on this site with nano cubes have done that well that i remember off..... and even with the Y or with the hydor flo is not enough in my opinion so i have a nother pump in the main display with the Y that i wasnt using and everything seems better...

just i thing my Y conector is not the same cause mine is like a screw in the biginning then is the divider and then extra cups and then the end just like yours (but i dont use does) so i think the hydro is better than the Y conector look at this link .... that's what i did except for the surface skimmer cause i had one already.....

Hope this helps.

Ok, I have a maxi jet 900, it returns about 230 gph, I think with the Y I lose alot of flow, I'm thinking about upgrading to a 1200, at 295 gph. I dunno, I'll just see how it is, but I think I'll leave the light on, people have told me on, because you want the algae bloom to start sooner than later, and others say that you should leave it off, for bacteria to grow, because they grow better in the dark, I think I might just leave them on 6-8 hours a day, one more thing what about water changes, I heard not to, because you may remove necessary bacteria that is needed in the cycle? What are your suggestions?

About your cycle on water people say 2 things:

1. they say that in middle of your cycle to do a big water change to help it. and then start your weekly water changes of 15%-25%.

2. they say that after your cycle one week later to do your first water change of 15%-25% of water change and then so on on your weekly water changes.

but IMHO i think number 2 works better sounds more logical.

and about light bouth are really true on better to get the bloom sonner than later, but if so try to keep your light at least 4-6 hours.

about maxijet in the link you can see the difference on 900 to 1200 but for a quicky the only diference is that 1200 has 65gph more but ...it also consumes more energy and tends to heat more than the 900 so thats why they chose 900 cause is not much the difference and requires less energy and doesnt heat that much as 1200 so all that problem doesnt worth the 65gph difference....

BUT ALL THIS IS MY OPINION IS UP TO YOU TO CHOSE THE RIGHT ONE BUT JUST GIVING YOU THE MOST INFO I CAN.

Day 8 Test Results

pH - 8.2
Ammonia - 3.0 ppm
Nitrite - +5.0 ppm
Nitrate - +160 ppm
Specific Gravity - 1.032
Salinity - 42
Temperature - 80.2 degrees F

The reason the specific gravity is so high as well as the salinity, is because I haven't done a freshwater top-off yet, that'll bring it down, I lost about 1 1/2 cm, since it has been up so I'll replace that today, and test the SG and S again. Ammonia has been around 3.0 ppm for a few days, hope it goes down sometime soon. The temperature reaches 80.9-81 at some points and in the night goes down to about 80 is that OK?

Day 20 Test Results

pH - 8.2-8.3ish
Ammonia - 0 ppm
Nitrite - 5.0+ ppm
Nitrate - 160+ ppm
Specific Gravity - 1.024-1.025ish
Salinity - 34-35ish
Temperature - 81 F

Is this normal for the nitrites and nitrates to be this high at this stage in the cycle?

It can be normal depending on the LR used was it cured or uncured?
Uncured can take a long while to see declines in perameters ... how ever if in a week or 2 you are still high you could do a small water change of 1 gallon or 2 gallons .....but this can prolong the cycle (tho that small should not )

You will have to do several water changes to get your nitrates back down but as Sadie mentioned you could start now, I think you have enough nitrites to keep the cycle going with no ill effects from a water change.

Aight, well I'll do a change tomarrow afternoon, and then test the water again, and post the results up here ASAP.

Day 26 results:

pH - 8.2-8.3ish
Ammonia - 0ppm
Nitrite - 0ppm
Nitrate - 15ppm
S.G. - 1.025
Sal. - 40
Temp. - 81 F

I think I might go buy some cleaners today, maybe a few snails, 1 or two hermits, and possibly a shrimp, what do you all think, and how do I go about acclimating them?

Your nitrates are a little high still. When was your last water change? How much are you changing out?

Acclimating cleaners is similar to acclimating corals. I like to float the bag in the tank, open it up, and while it is floating i drip a couple cups of my tank water into the bag at a rate of about 2 drops per second. After you double the amount of water in the bag, you can dump out as much of the water in the bag as possible, then put the critters in the tank.

I agree that you need a water change to get the nitrates down some. You should be doing weekly water changes now to keep your water parameters in check.

Well I currently have in the tank 9 Cerith snails, 4 Margarita snails, a peppermint shrimp, and a cleaner shrimp...They all seem to be doing fine after 5 days in the tank...I'll test the water today, and do a 25-30% water change...and post the results asap
