I would recommend siphioning it out and increase your flow ,also kick the lights off or shortent the photo period back that should help kill it .....since it is a new tank this is just a normal part of it ....if all else fails you could try the stuff Mike recommended or chemi-clean but try the increased flow matched with a longer period of darkness 1st

I agree that it may be a part of the new tank syndrome so I would try natural methods like Sadie described before trying any chemical methods. The reduced photo period and increased flow will hopefully control this pest.

the pods are indeed very good. I have heard some people say some hermits will eat cyano however I have never observed this. They should help in keeping the sandbed stirred up some and the cyano broken up though.

cyano in a new tank is common - let it run its course and the last thing you want to do at this point is start dumping meds in. best case scenario that may kill the cyano but it may kill other bacteria as well and all that death will just fuel no3 and phosphates. let the tank age - change water, siphone, keep it as clean as possible, and be patient it will go away. also as sadie said look at flow and overfeeding issues. like sadie said, siphon out as much of it as you can, increase the flow in the affected areas, and shorten the photoperiod until it goes away.

I have seen phosphate sponges and sponges that claim to get rid of this stuff...would you all suggest these for this problem or not?

Since the cyno is on the sand bed simply syphon it out. Also, you can buy some chemicals from the LFS that will that kill cyno bactieria like the product Vanish!. This is only a temporary solution though.
