Great thread...

I was thinking of trying one...but I haven't had any problems with any paramaters...everything has been great. I was really thinking of it as a replacement to carbon...not sure if thats even an option..

A skimmer will not replace carbon, they are 2 different kinds of filtration. The skimmer works as mechanical filtration while carbon is a type of chemical filtration. Carbon will absorb compounds in your tank that can't be filtered out by other methods.

Hi All,

I was able to get the best of both worlds: surface skimmer and fission protein skimmer installed in my 24g JBJ Nano. I moved the protein skimmer to the middle compartment and was able to get it to fit. It's a pain though changing the carbon, because the carbon bag now sits underneath the skimmer, doh!

To help reduce the amount of air that gets put back into the aquarium I put some filter media in between the protein skimmer and outlet of the sump. The filter media can be bought for about $5 dollars at the LFS.

It's s very important that the protein skimmer be installed at a certain level above the water. If it's too high it will not capture much protein. If it's too low its container will fill up very quickly with almost all water. Please refer to the skimmer manual. The manual gives a nice diagram of where it should be placed above water level, but I imagine you will want to experiment yourself with the placement level. I noticed from my own testing if its too low the container fills up in 2 to 6 hours. If it's the right level it should fill up in about a day depending on bioload.

The protein's skimmers container feels up very quickly in my tank. I have to empty it once a day. I am guessing due to my tanks bioload. It does seem to be mostly water too, which is disappointing, but my tank does look better since I installed it (more coralline algae and corals look healthier) so it must be helping. For example, I used to have to clean the algae off my tank's glass every 2 to 3 days, now it takes about a week for the algae to be noticeable on the glass.

skipm is probably right though, this is a baindage for bad husbandry, but at least my tank looks good. I wouldn't recommend removing any filtration you already had either. The skimmer should be an addition to your filtration, not a replacement. Meaning keep your carbon, sponge, other filters you already had in place. The carbon helps in removing any poisons in the tank such as amonia and heavy metals.

To help others with the setup, I've included a picture below.

I hope I didn't come off as being rude with my post and appologize if I did. I was only trying to give my view on the need of a skimmer in a nano.

No you didn't. I was trying to agree with you about the husbandry. The protein skimmer is for the rest of us out there that only clean our tanks once or twice a month.

I clean my tank about twice a month and the skimmer is helping. If I cleaned my tank once a week, I probably wouldn't need it. Personally, I don't think a tank can have too much filteration unless the nutrients are removed before the inhabitants get a chance to consume them. I have a feeling reef tanks do better with minimal filteration and a lot of water changes, due to the need for nutrients in the water for corals. Fish only tanks more filteration the better.

yeah you didnt sound bad.... but anyways nichols is right about what he stated cause im like skipm i said no to skimmer cause i do my water changes weekly and i keep control of everything all the time i test my water every 2-3 days and if something wrong i fix it ASAP and i might not have time for anything but i always have time for check the tank just too keep a eye on it so nothing goes wrong. cause i hear alot of people complaining of high nitrates and well mine are always between 0 -10 and i have alot of fish but i always keep a good eye on everything. the tank is my perfect match eventhough gives me stress all the time.... lol lol lol

The Fission skimmer is definitly made cheaply. It's been installed for about one month and stopped working. The air hose came detached and it looks its supeglueued in. I returned it and got a new motor.

My tank does look nicer since I've been using it. Now, I only have to scrape the algae off my glass once week, before I installed it I had to scrape the algae off my glass every two to three days.
