Contemplating an upgrade. Need advice.

Hey,

I am thinking of doing this upgrade:

http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/nanot ... cts_id=288

Has anyone done this, or heard of doing this?

There seems to be several advantages. Separate controls for the PC lights would allow the new ones to be actinic and can then simulate dawn/dusk. Having the ability to have only actinics on would really let me show off my LPS's. This lighting would let me keep more SPS's and even an anemone should I want one. My softies that are "living" in my tank could be "thriving" instead. This package also includes the moonlight fix.

Does the claim that "temp drops are reported" seem reasonable with their improved heat shield? Hoe difficult is this upgrade?

Some unbiased advice would be nice.

Cheers

My first observation of those upgrades is that you are cramming all of those PC's together, literally side-by-side. As a result, I can imagine that you could lose up to 40%-50% of the light that isnt being reflected from the back of the bulb back into the tank. I have read several posts where people have ordered mods from that site and received NO instructions on how to go about installing it. If your goal is SPS, anemones, and LPS, why not run it topless with some sort of MH fixture? You could get a nice 150 watt MH fixture for right around $200-$250, plus you could sell off your current hood that is on the Nanocube and make some $$$ back.

The claims that they make about a temp drop are probably legit, especially if they add additional fans and stuff.

HTH,

Great point about the loss of reflecting capacity. I never thought of that. That setup you pointed me to is great. Will look into it.

Thanks

I have ordered several upgrades from nanotuners.com I understand the concern that since the lights are so close together you loose some light from lack of reflectivity. I can tell you though that the extra bulbs MORE than make up for the reflectivity losses. I have gone from stock lights on my 12 gallon cube to the 3.24 and now I have the 4.24 mod. The light increase is significant with each upgrade! As for the instructions...I received a 5 page manual with detailed instructions on how to go about the upgrade. I also know that if you have any questions a phone call to nanotuners will get you any help you need. I experienced a good temp drop when I replaced the stock heatshield/fans with the ones they provide. My tank never tops 80.6 degrees.

I just ordered the 3.36 upgrade for the NC24. The extra light will be great, but did it mostly for the extra 36 watter that can run independently with an actinic. It will really show off my LPS's for dawn and dusk. I figure the upgraded heat shield is also a great compromise to any sort of chiller. If it drops me down 2 degrees, I'm Laughing.

Hopefully, it's as easy as they say to install...
