Clownfish poisoned with Chemi Clean?

Guys,

I was treating my water with Chemi-clean, and as recommended, had turned off my cannister filter to prevent the carbon from interfering with its action. I turned the filter back on this morning and jumped in the shower. When i got out, my clownfishes were swimming weird, like they couldn't keep themselves up. I quickly tried to set up a quarantine tank, but they died before i could transfer them. I tested my water and everything seems normal. All are within params, Ammonia, which i thought was the culprit was within safe levels. I am wondering if Chemipure and the carbon in my filter may have reacted chemically and spewed out some poisonous compound into my tank... this sucks. has anyone had something like this happen to them before?

Did you test your nitrites. I suspect that your problem was turning off the filter and then introducing contaminated water back into the system hours later when you turned the filter back on. If you had some nitrates in the system, they turn into nitrites in the absence of oxygen. Might be wrong, but that would be my guess. In the future, if you turn off an external filter like that, I would suggest that you drain the filter before putting it back on line.

I tend to agree with the above but would recommend a largish 50% water change and run an air stone (which is recommended with the the treatment of chemi clean) Then continue with some smaller changes 5% or so for the next few days when running chemi -clean keep the filter on and the filter /carbon out this will help oxygenate the tank as well  Keep us posted

Yeah so when you did the treatment ??? there was no pump making water to flow or filter???? cause like instruccions says only take carbon or any absorvent chemical stuff so the chemiclean is not absorved and wil work great. that or running a air stone ... i guess you did it wrong and your fish died of lack of oxygen wow sorry to hear about your loss man but next time be more careful.... cause i used the product 2 times already and never had bad reactions......

P.S: just follow sadye directions and you'll be fine....and well  in a week or so fish shopping :)

they're gone. :( since then, my tank's gone to crap too. I've been thinking of starting over. my corals are still ok so far, so maybe it's not too late to do a rescue, but my rocks will need to be scrubbed clean of the algae/diatom/cyano/whatever it is, growth... thanks for all your help guys

sorry to hear that
what you may wish to do is to start over keep the corals keep a couple cups of old sand and scrub the rocks ......keep 1/2 the water and reset up wait a couple of weeks then look for a couple fish .....In the begining I could not keep clowns no matter what ...... I think that if you reset up and start over you will have learned from your mistakes ..... I dont think that there is one person here who has not had something to pull there hair out over myself included .....just watch the nutrients in the tank an go from there ....when you start to see problems be ready to do a largish change .....keep some phosguard on hand to add to your system to rid the excess phosphates , that coupled with water changes should keep them in check for you .... In the mean time I am sorry for your loss.
