Chillers for 28g nano

Hello Everyone. I am just about to set up a jbj 28 gallon w/ 150 watt metal hilides and have heard that these really need a chiller because of the heat from the halide. Has anyone got any recommendations on which Chiller to purchase? :maitre

I don't use chillers, but it all depends on how much chilling power you need. For our nano tanks I've seen those Ice probes work well, or you could just use a JBJ nano chiller (they made your tank after all...).

This would be a good chiller for anyone with a nano up to 150L! I have also found them cheap :alice

I have the same size tank as you with the same lighting set up and currently run a JBJ Mini Arctica 1/15hp. It works very well.

One nice feature about the JBJ's that I like is there required flow rate. They do not need a high flow rate to be effective. 110gph for the Mini is the minimum so depending on your set up and preferences you can get away with a smaller pump.

Another nice feature is they run very quiet and the filter is REALLY easy to clean.

Cost I've seen in the 350 range.

Tim mentions the JBJ Nano. The old Nano's use to have a dial to set the temperature that you wanted. These Nano models had a bad thermastat problem where the thermastat would stick overcooling the tank. Productions was stopped and the dial set up was replaced with a digital touch pad, the same digital setup that JBJ uses on there larger models. Since the fix the chillers run wonderfully. Im not sure that the Nano is back in production but I know you can still find some of the old dial types for sale online. It doesn't mean all the dial types were bad, just that there were a lot of problems with them.

Thanks! After a bit of research I decided that if I do need a chiller with my new tank I will be going with the mini artica as it can control a heater as well as it cooling so it will handle all temperature for the tank. (Summer will tell me if I need the chiller though)

Thank you for that info, very useful!

***Edit*** I actually was quoting information I found for the current prime 1/15 hp chiller. :stonight Guess I need to get my head out of the clouds.

I had tried all types of mods on the 28g HQI to try and get it to run cooler. Ended up with the Hailea 150 chiller and it does a fine job. One mod you can try that does help is switching all 4 fans to suck in air instead of blowing air out - it did help , but not enough in my case.
I also think this system shouldn't be sold without a chiller , or at the very least , customers should be made aware of heat problems due to the metal halide before they purchase. My chiller added an extra £150 to an already expensive system , some people just can't afford it after forking out their "hard earned" on the system.
They are cracking little tanks when you get them running just right
Of course , if you live in the North Pole you should be ok

HI Tanx

I've got a 28g nano and have aquired a Hailea 150 chiller. Any chance you could let me have details of how you installed this? Thanks Bonzoid
