chambers

Hi,

Just curious what people keep in each of the chambers they have?

I heard most keep a heater and PH in chamber 3...sorry if this sounds dumb, lol, but what is PH? Like a buffering pillow?

No dumb questions! PH is Power Head.

For my chambers in my nanocube 12 DX i have:

1. One sponge (if any, right now - no sponge)
2. Chaetomorpha (macro algae) with a 3 LED light on a reverse photo period
3. Heater and PH ( :cool1: )

1. Thermometer probe otherwise nothing, if needed thats where I put my sponge or carbon or phos pad

2. Skimmer

3. Heater

4. Fuge with Chaetomorpha, 2x 7oz mud trays side by side and 10 LED lights 24/7 (for now at least, may go reverse photo period at some point)

5. Pump to chiller and back to tank. Also this is where I have my top off sensors, back up sensor and top off return.

So my chambers are filling up faster than I thought.

1. has a sponge and a little carbon, was thinking of a small piece of poly filter but still on the fence about that

2. is filled completely with LR rubble

3. has a heater and PH

I actually bought an LED light with adapter(submersible!) to put over chamber 1...I want to stuff some macro algae in there on top of the sponge...or should I be aiming to take out some LR in chamber 2 to make room?

Another thought was transferring the LR and adding macro to chamber 1...then putting the sponge and pads in chamber 2 or is there a reason this isn't usually used for that purpose?

Thanks for all your input!

personally i believe that sponge is a PITA. although good for filtering out scum, it is still a nitrate factory if not cleaned regularly (every week).

would much prefer to go the following;

1. LR rubble and macro

2. carbon and maybe phosguard/purigen

3. heater and PH

i ran sponge in my HOB filter for the first 3 weeks because it came with the filter, but since then have never used it.

LR is nature's filter and regular water changes are your best friend in a nano :)

Thanks for the advice! Hmm, what's a PITA?

Well, with the new live rock, and me being meticulous about rock placement. And the flow blowing all the junk that was on the rock everywhere. I thought the sponge would be good to keep debris out of back chambers, just for now.

I got some chaeto and stuffed it on top of chamber 2's live rock. I know some ambient lighting from the JBJ still reaches back there but I plugged in a submersible LED just in case. The guy actually recommended LED's stay on 24/7...says they last longer?!

PITA = Pain In The A$$

i totally agree with you about catching the debris, i jsut personally wouldn't recommend it being there for any longer that 2-3 weeks.

i know plenty of reefers who have their refugium lighting on 24/7, so i don't believe that this will be a problem for you!

I use the sponges just to scrub debris out of the water. For the lighting I personally believe that giving a small period of dark with benefit the photosynthesis process. (one of the classes I took was botany and this was one of the things I remember) I have seen and heard of both approaches working fine, so the choice is yours.
