The protein skimmer should help, and you weren't taken, especially if you have fish in your reef tank. The skimmer will save you having to clean you aquarium every week, and it removes fish waste, normally only removed through water changes. Just make sure you empty the skimmer's container every day of so. It feels up quickly, and does no good if its full.
I have the fission skimmer for my 24g nano installed for about a month and my tank has never looked better. I've really seen an increase in purple coralline algae, and a decrease in the soft algaes which is a good thing.
You can calculate when the break even point will be in the future of the skimmer purchase. There's a break even point because it will allow you not to have to clean your tank as often and this reduce costs. In the example below, I have included my estimate on sea salt mix. This example doesn't include the savings you will benefit from of not having to purchase as much carbon and other consumables that need to be purchased too.
Skimmer Price: $25.00 online.
Weekly Sea Salt mix price: $2.00 (estimate)
Monthly Sea Salt without skimmer: $8.00 (estimate)
Monthly Sea Salt with skimmer: $4.00 (estimate)
$ 25.00 / $4 = 6.25 (break even point or ROI point: Approx 6 months)
It will take approximately six months to break even on your purchase of the skimmer if the salt costs $2.00 a week and the skimmer lets you get away with only cleaning your tank twice a month. I didn't take into consideration the additional cost of electricity for the skimmer, but it's low wattage and should be negligible.
Although, I know many posters in this forum pride themselves in not having to purchase extra filters and doing weekly water changes instead. It seems to be the nano-culture.
