Blastomussa...

Hey Reefers,

I have a quick question. My LFS has two different types of Blastomussa corals for sale. They are priced at $90.00 bucks per colony.

One has more heads than the other like 6 heads and is colored bright orange with a smudge of green in the outer lips.

The other one is about 4 heads a lot smaller but has a blue/green color in the center with orange on the outside.

Both are killer, I know you want pictures but I didn't have my digital with me. Help me out, which one would you choose.

I am not sure what they are mike but I like the sound of the blue green combo and in your tanks they would probably grow like no tomorrow just my opinion

Unless you know one color morph is significantly more rare, I'd say it's pretty much just personal preference as to which will look better in the tank.

Thanks,

For the opinions, I called my brother Dragon and asked him while on my way to the LFS. He told me to go with the rare one, that it would look more exotic.

I guess it comes down to real estate and I don't have that much to spare, so why not go the rarest.

I ended up shelling out some more cash and got a neon green with orange outer circle. I glued it to a nice spot on in the front of the tank towards the bottom.

I saw it this morning and it rocks, I cannot wait to share my pics with you guys. My blasto did go into my SPS tank.

Both tanks are doing great, and I forgot to mention that I discontinued the T-5 bulbs for more efficient PC lighting. The T-5 were burning out too quickly and were getting really hot.

I'm really happy because I dremmeled them myself into the hood and now I have 4 x 24 watts plus a 13 watt fuge in both tanks. They are easier to maintence than the T-5, they were hard to pull out.

Nanoturners is fun because you save money and you get to work on your own just like servicing your favorite car, hope that makes sense.

T5's are the best thing that can happen to LPS actually. I noticed this with my acans...and then with other things when I tried it out.

I borrowed my friend's T5 fixture and suddenly all my LPS got much more vibrant in color...I have the Outer Orbit on my 20 and I'm going to have it re-configured with T5's instead of the actinics...my tank will overall look less blue and my corals will look much better.

I'm a blasto freak lately...I have about 7 wellsi's...and yes, it's all about what looks more "rare"...especially in a tank as small as yours...put up a pic when you can, look forward to seeing it!

Here are my blastos now:

Rbaby,

Your blastos are awesome, I almost thought I was looking through Tigah's thread oops,,, j/k...

They are really nice.

But after carefully examining all your blastos, mine is very different it is neon green in the middle and it has bright orange on the outer rim. It cost me a pretty penny...

But it was well worth it... I raced home just now during lunch to snap some quick pics, just for my impatient brother...

I hope you like the picture when you see it, I placed it next to my two florida rics and my two new green yumas...

p.s
I will no longer support T-5, at least not in my tank, the 11 inch series was known for overheating and blow out. I went through at least six T-5 replacements in just under 3 months. The Realux 24watt true actinics run cooler and my blastomussa love it. I think the T-5 was an awesome addition to reefing but just didn't cut it for my nano cube..

All blastos cost a pretty penny I'm afraid...at least those that are worth buying (in my eyes that is), My purples cost me $250 without shipping and at the time they were only 3 heads...they're a lot pricier than acans which is why I feel people should be more selective about their blastos...they grow slower too and are MUCH harder to frag.

I'd love to see it--an orange rim sounds very cool...for centers, green are most common but if the skirt is orange it sounds like a great catch.

I just got these today--they will be arriving tomorrow:

damn I was going to say, that's a great pic you took, but that must be the seller's pics! I wonder what kind of camera they used to take this shot....it's amazingly colorful and sharp. I'd love to have those, haha. How much for those??

To get really really nice crisp pics...what vendors do (such as Platinum Reefs and Atlantis) they take top-down shots with no pumps. This takes out the "middle man" which is the acrylic or glass tank which may be dirty that can cause the pics to look less crisp...however you risk the polyps closing when you move the coral closer to the surface.

These were fairly cheap, it's very small...the polyps are only about .5" big for the largest so it was like $160 shipped. I also added some true blue xenia to my order, can't wait!

Rbaby,

Are you talking about Atlantis Aquarium in Fremont California? Because that's where I shop and I know that Ming the owner takes pictures of his blastos from top down like you were explaining.

Yeap...they also have a habit of blasting their corals with actinics in the pic tank...which is why I always usually hesitate to buy anything from them.

The only person I deal with there is Joleen--she always takes care of me and I haven't been displeased. But yeah, regarding the pic-taking technique...it's the best way to get crisp pictures...just not as convenient for hobbyists like us :).

Rbaby,

This world is too small. Joleen and Ming are who sold me all my SPS corals. I live right around the corner from them. I get my water changes from them every sunday. Joleen is very special to me and just yesterday I installed her ICA in her cube.

I got her to get a cube up on her counter and she has two adorable clowns. Not to mention the beautiful red yuma that she won't sell to no one.

She gives the best prices in town and she is super sweet and kind. You should see her little daugther so adorable.

Joleen is very happy with my work on her cube, it was overheating really bad and she needed help. Since I'm a huge CCJUNG fan, I got her to purchase from him and I did the rest, even the plumbing.

This world is so small, I ran into a reefer on nano-reef that knew about mikeguerrero signature series and met me in person. Rbaby, it was so cool, he asked to shake hands and I was honored. He owns the larnie edition.

He asked me if I know Tigah in person and I said no, but I told him my brother has met the famous Rbaby, he said that's so cool. I can't wait untill I meet Chris, he has really been there for my reef needs.

Mike

P.S

I cannot wait to let Joleen know about how we all met online.... She just got in a bunch of new blastos I was going to purchase one but I had went to another LFS already. Small world huh Ruthie???

Mike you're too funny! I never stomped on Chris for never giving me an rbaby signature cube! LOL...but anyway--I'm very happy with my tank upgrade, I should post pics on NT, it's going so well.

I heard great things about Joleen...and blah on a yuma! I bought a $200 pink yuma that died so I'm quite allergic to them now.

I would like to go to the store someday but it's just so far :)...tell me the next time you're in town and I'll try to be on your end of the neighborhood :).

Rbaby,

According to my little bro, you are very cool and someone that loves the hobby like us. My wife and I would welcome a visit from a fellow reefer anytime. As a matter of fact I've been bugging Dragon and his girlfriend to drive up to visit me just for a weekend.

If he ever takes the bait, I'll be sure he invites you and maybe one of your friends. That way we will make it a scavenger hunt for our LFS out here in the SF Bay Area.

Later,,, oh yeah, Joleen would give you the warmest hug, she is soooo nice....

Here are two pictures of my new blastomussa... They are not the greatest, since I took them over lunch break and had to rush.... But they give you an idea...

I'll post over the weekend some better pics....

at last the famous pics. I've seen those pieces at Tongs, but never inquired at the price. Interesting pieces you've picked up. They are colorful, nice addition.

I also like very much the birds nest you have on the far right. Cool bright colored tips.
