black sponge

does useing the black sponges in the back compartment really raise the nitrates???? i have a 12 gallon nano reef tank.

Yes it can if it isnt cleaned regularly. It traps all that stuff that you dont want in your tank but if you dont clean it, the detritus will begin to break down which can ultimately lead to higher nitrates.

I suggest cleaning the sponges 1-2 times per week. HTH,

I took all of my sponges out and use poly floss from wal-mart....it's in the craft section $3 a bag and just toss it every week or so.....no problems with nitrates. :lol:
