Best cure for algae = TIME?

So, there are always these posts about people with algae issues. We all know about the basic "algae cycle" of a new tank. I'm wondering, does anyone else notice a "pattern" for a new tank? A pattern that even with the utmost care can only be minimally controlled until it has run its course?

My nano tanks have the following pattern of algae:
Stage one- Diatomic Algae... this lovely rust colored nightmare appears in your nice new clean tank shortly after set up. With good flow and good waterchanges you can reduce it more quickly, but 2-6 weeks is the norm for this outbreak

Stage two - The Christmas Twins... aka Green Hair and Cyanobacteria. These guys can be a chronic plague for the first good year of a new tank. Only with great water maintenance and manual removal can they be well controlled. Forum rumors point to low flow and Magnesium deficiencies that lead to this.

Stage three - The Christmas Twins will appear sporadically. If you've been adding flow and Magnesium, you can minimize their visits.

Finally stage four - Other than the Christmas twins weekend holidays... the tank over a year seems to be going steady without the algae.

Does anyone else notice this pattern in newly setup tanks? Do you feel that it is a maintenance issue or just something that a tank is going to go through either way... something that has to be waited out?

I have always found a similar cycle in a new tank like you describe. I have heard it called the new tank syndrome before. Some of it can be minimized through things like flow and consistent maintenance but they still make an appearance during the initial break in period.
