Ben's 10-gallon

The yellow clown goby died today. It was pretty sudden but I believe it was due to one or more of these two causes...

Lack of food, I would feed mysis every other day AT LEAST as I have heard of other people doing that. Not stressing if I missed a feeding. I think that the fish being meant more feedings were needed, which is something I overlooked.

And Cyanide.

I believe that both of these conclusions seem reasonable to me...and although I lost a fish at least I learned something. From now on I will stress feedings more and learn a little bit about dietary needs before just assuming.

Now that I am left with a fishless tank I am considering getting a clownfish pair. Would that be fine for a 10-gallon tank? Anything special I should know (ex. Are they jumpers?)? Thanks in advance,

Ben

If the clownfish are paired before you by them its a recipe for success. If they are not, its hit or miss and it would be very difficult to catch one of them if they fight. Trust me on that one... I dont really want to talk about it, but trust me... hehe

update

My tanks algae problem is fixed, at least I hope so...

The steps I took to fix this were,

Add carbon and phosban.
3 Day blackout

I thought my problem was phosphate...but now Im not so sure. I bought a test kit and it showed levels of 0 for my tank water and RO water...

Other than the whole algae deal I converted my AC 70 into a fuge and plan on adding cheato to it. Also I added a MJ-600 and a moonlight (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ...&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Np=1&pc=1&N=0&Nty=1). I plan on getting coral pretty soon as well from some local reefers,

Ben,

Before you add corals I would try to bring that Calcium level down some most people try and run theres around 400-500ppm I keep mine at right about 480ppm you really only need it that hight if you plan on keep SPS but for mushrooms and softies it doesnt need to be that high. If your planning on keeping SPS I would look into upgrading your lighting I tried with the same light you have and it just isnt powerful enough for them. anyway hope this helps you out tanks coming along pretty good cant wait to see it when you start adding more corals.

Your phosphate levels may read 0 because your algae is using it up. The problem with hair algae is that once some dies, that death just fuels more life. Cheato and a phosphate remover should do the trick.

I have "talked" to someone on RC and they said that most likely my calcium readings are off. The salt I use should place my calcium in the correct range. I believe that me readings are so far off because my test kit is confusing to read...my calcium one anyways. It states to stop adding drops once a pure blue color is reached...what exactly is pure blue? Anyways I have decided to take my calcium reading with a grain of salt.

I am now almost positive that my water changes are fueling the algae...a day after the water change algae began growing on the glass. However due to the phosban, I am assuming, it is not nearly as bad as before. That with the cheato I will be getting should help out immensely.

Thanks for the concern,
Ben

Was going to post this sooner, but I never got around to it. On January 21st I got my first coral from a local reefer. He was VERY generous. He gave me….

Mushrooms: Purple with blue spots, white with purple, and a greenish purple.
Xenia: Pom-Pom and long stalk? The long stalk is a tint of yellow.
Toadstool, very small.
Kenya Tree
Colt Coral
Zoas: Green center with brown skirt, and green skirt and purple and orange center. Both have very small polyps.
GSP: He told me this was pretty rare type, he called it Feather Green Star Poylps.

The best part is that it was ALL FREE! So far they are all doing fine and have settled nicely. I’m not sure If I’m going to post any pics. I may wait for them to fill in,

Just a brief update along with 3 questions.

A pepermint shrimp was added to the tank about a month ago. It has molted two times since it has been in my tank. Am I correct to assume that this is a good sign?

Also I added some snails, but my hermits killed them off within a few days. I do have many shells in the tank. But the hermits appear to only like a certain "type" of shell, and all of those shells are being occupied. Is this a common occurance even when there is an abundance of shells? Would simply adding more of thier "favorite shells solve the problem?

hermits are known to kill snails, its just the way they get new shells. i have had this problem with larger hermits, i switched to as small as i could find and havent had this problem since. it is a good sign that your peppy is molting, sign of a healthy set-up.
