Base rock for aquascape...

Is there anything cheaper that anyone has purchased that will work as a base for an aquascape? I really don't have the space to DIY live rock too since I live in a condo... And I really don't want to purchase more LR especially at a LFS, so I usually wait and look on craigslist. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

Do you have any LFS's in your area that sell dry LR? (well i guess it wouldnt be LIVE!!) I bought some like that for Around $1.00-$1.50/lb from a LFS. I think that lace rock will work too.

You can usually build a "shelf" out of PVC and egg crate that you then attach your LR to... if you do it right you cant even tell it is there plus it provides a hiding area for smaller fish.

The LR that I have weigh 10-15 pounds. Would a PVC stand and eggcrat will hold that amount of weight?

And is there any other rocks that would work in saltwater? Anyone????

"Ocean rock" is what i got, basically just a very pourous rock, has taken in a couple of weeks, and covered already....

IMO i would buy the amount of the best LR you can afford and live with it. try aquascaping with small island piles seperated by flats of sand or pile it all in one corner with a large sand flat covering the rest - more natural looking then the "rock wall" so many of us end up building. be creative try something different :) and most of all avoid the fruit stand!! stacked losely and perhaps glued/cable tied/pinned together a little goes a long way. PVC shelves will work but rarely look natural and base rock belongs in the garden around the flowers :lol:

I have noted that you need to put a space after a link before adding a period otherwise it ends up being part of the link your posting.

I know some people will go crazy over this but I have used lava rock in a nano before, it was used for dwarf seahorses and I wasn't going to risk adding hydroids with LR. It is very porous too and to me thats a plus for biological filtration.
