Anyone use this and have good things to say? I'm currently looking to upgrade from a CPR BakPak II.

I have one. What size tank are you going to put it on? I've done a lot of research on DIY skimmers lately and I'm not overwhelmed with it's skimate production compared to what most people expect to get. I just did a recirc mod and I'm looking to do a gate mod valve on it as well. It's on a 60 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump so it is a little undersized for the tank. I'll probably add a second pump to it to get more air flow.

Overall for the cost and quality I'm happy. I like that it wasn't too expensive to mod. I don't feel bad about drilling it you know?

Hey Phischy!

I know that the ASM line is pretty good, but like Cris said I think the mini is a bit weak. The larger ones seem to perform pretty well for the cost. You might want to take a look at these: http://octopusskimmer.com/

I have heard that the build quality on the Octopus skimmers are much better than the ASM and they perform well. I would also suggest looking for a good deal on a used Euro-reef. What size tank is this for?

i am currently using the ASM mini. i didnt like it at first, but after acouple slight mods it works awsome. my set up is a 30 breeder w/ 10gal sump. i went with the mini cause of its height, i needed one under 28 inches due to my stand being 30inches. the mods.....i drilled out the plastic where the airline tubing hooks to. i drilled it as large as i could without going to a larger tubing. i also started out clipping acouple needles off the wheel to decrease water flow, four at first finished with twelve. like cris said, i to wasnt happy with its skimming but now i get really dark skimmate. HTH

Erik

P.S. learned these mods from other ASM owners around here. they have done them to all the sizes. even to the octopuses.

I've been researching for mods because I hear so many people talking about moding the ASM's but it's hard to find any specifics. First time I've heard of either of these two. Have you thought about doing a mesh mod? I think I'll drill out my venturi as well. That's a great idea.

Do you have a silencer on your air tube? Mines so loud. I can tell how well it's skimming by how loud the intake is. If you know where I can get one let me know.

Thanks.

cris,
i have a small water bottle stuffed with filter floss, with the tube throught the cap as my silencer. works ok not super though, still triing to find a better solution. as for the mesh mod...i have a friend that did it and hasnt had any problems, works great......but.....works just as good as nippin off some nipples on the needle wheel. nippin off the nipples......best if done equally, or evenly.

It's going on my 50gallon tank. I have a nice stand, but I had drawers built into it so I've got a really restricted height in the sump, which is why I was looking at the ASM mini. However, the new mini's have the pump under the tower, instead of on the side so the new mini's won't fit.

So, I need to measure my height and find an in sump skimmer that'll fit.

I kept my tank, but let it go to hell as I concentrated my time and funds on homebrewing, now i want to get my tank back to spec. Nothing died, but it's really dirty....some of my bulbs are 2 years old! And yeah, the're all being replaced tonight.

phischy..... Let us know what you go with. Have you considered building one? I think eventually I'm going to give it a try. The concepts are pretty basic as long as you follow the basics. I'm saying that ofcourse with out ever having attempted it.

Eric, I bought a little pump a while back for premixing and it came with a little silencer.... Too small for my hose however when I put it over the tube it completely silences the noise. I'm thinking about disecting it. If I can come up with a better DIY silencer I'll let you kow.

Nippin off the Nipples. I thought those were there to assist in breaking up the air bubbles creating smaller bubbles? You said you nipped them to reduce water flow, right?

yeah i cut some off to reduce flow but it still chops into micro bubbles. i cleaned my pump yesterday and counted the nipples again and i only cut off 8, sorry i never did the last nipping. planed on it but it works good enough for me. the nipple mod i heard from a local before he mesh modded, just wasnt enough for him.

The newly designed mini-g has the pump below the tower...which makes the unit too tall for my sump. So....I'm going to need another option or find an older model mini-g.

This sucks!
