it looks to have hard ridges when it closes (it comes out of a hard calcified base much like the stony corals). When it's expanded it has thick tentacles and the tips are blunt and are white.

hi aquarium girl, I can tell you have done some research because you placed that sun coral under a ledge but just incase someone else out there didn't know, I thought I should say it anyway - sun corals although very beautiful are all animal and as such are a high mantenence coral. They require frequent if not daily target feeding. Feeding hats are the most common way of doing that, but where you have it may make that task a little more dificult. I know they say to put them under ledges but light really doesn't hurt them because a healthy colony can resist algae growth and frequent feeding and moderate current will keep them healthy.

I'd second that. It's not necessary for them to be particularly shaded. They're more prone to extending they're polyps if they're not in direct light, but mine have been trained to start extending when they sense food in the water. I don't use a feeding cap, just a turkey baster so I can effectively target feed. You want them in an low-flow area so they have more time to grab the food, but not in a stagnant area that will encourage algae to grow on them.

thanks everyone for the tips and comments, they are graciously appreciated ;-)

I'm hope this spot will work out for the sun coral :neutral: , actually it was my intent when I was aquascaping that I would put a sun coral in this spot. So far it seems to be doing great; I target feed it every other day and I plan on rotating the coral once a week just to make sure all the polyps get some food. I feed it mysis shrimp, cyclop-eeze and some pellets too.

very nice! your sun looks well cared for - I would love to have one but I know it wouldn't get the care it needed in my tank. And is that a red trachy by the green one? I've been looking for one just like that to place next to my green one in my tank too. I love the contrast of color between the two similar critters like that. I've got an orange and a green fungia side by side and two dif colored clams next to each other, a pair of faviads, and two dif colored sarcos (yellow and beige) and of course shrooms and zoas all of them side by side like that - very cool theme!

Well, here it is... with some new additions!! Everything from the 3 gallon and the 10 gallon went into the 30 gallon. Still needs lots of live rock to fill it up, but I think I'm off to a good start.
