I'm in my freshman year at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. At the end of semester i'll be transferring to the Fort Crockett Campus in Galveston. I plan on taking alot of MARB(Department of Marine Biology) classes and work in one of the many Marine Fisheries on Pelican Island. What school are you going to?? What do you want to major in??

Hi firefish

It's so amazing that you're doing Marine Bio, it would have been my choice too but in this part of the world it's better to be practical than visionary (i'd never get a job with BMarineBiology here).

Anyway, i'm going to ANU (the Australian National University) on saturday. sorry but what does A&M stand for?

Thanks

When the school first opened it was known as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas. But because the university has grown so much, it's just called A&M.....the school specializes in many different areas now, not just Ag and Mechanical engineering.

I'll probaly end up changing my major........it's the same here in the States, there's almost no line of work available for a Marine Bio graduate.....I'd love to work for the Texas Institute of Oceanography, or a Marine Fishery somewhere along the coast......i've got a lot to decide and think about.....

Yup, I actually completed 2 out of the 4 yrs for the Marine Biology degree program down in Galveston but soon realized that work was going to be very difficult, if not impossible, to find with that degree.

Not a reason at all not to pursue that degree. Sometimes I wish I did. I was just thinking more about my finances at the time the decision was made to go into something broader. Good luck to both of you. Just stay with what interests ya!

Yup, and when Conn moved to main campus I met him through Zippy and thus began my foray into saltwater systems and now look at me. A blooming junkie! Whoop.

Yeah, like djconn, money is the biggest thing that's swinging my interest towards something besides marine bio....it's sad that there's not more out there to do with a marine bio degree. I'm still not sure.....i may end up staying with bio......

Hi all

Yup, like i said, we all need jobs. Anyway, when you get your degree, Firefish, what would it say? Fromm what you wrote, you can choose subjects to make up the credits for your degree. Here, we decide what to do first; then take the subjects we need to get the correct credits.

to the marine bio aggie: double major. If you have two degrees you'll be more able to market yourself better.

As for what to bring to college: clothes, quarters, good attitude. It's amazing, but you really don't need much, you'll find yourself accumulating a ton of crap over the semesters.

My only advice is to watch your GPA the first two semesters, it's the easiest time to screw it up and you'll spend the rest of your college career trying to fix it. That and do as many internships as you can, hell, that's almost as important as the actual degree.

Texas Tech's a great school......i've got a couple of friends from high school that go there, and they say they love it. i visited one over Christmas, Lubbock's a pretty cool little city.....they've got a pretty good football team to, we almost lost to em' last season......Good luck to you and your cousin.......

Thanks Phischy

I'm bringing a tonne of stuff as it is, clothes, shoes, bags, books (they're expensive in AU) etc.

Thanks for the advice all.

And, it's hard to believe that the only nanotank member in college now is Firefish (hint, hint)

Cheers
