Additives for my 30G FOWLR

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question, I have a 30G FOWLR with a few fish and some custodians. Should I be using any additives? I read in a few places you should add some Iodine and Calcium to your water. Do I need to add anything?

I am also going to get a feather duster soon; do I need to add liquid foods for it? what are the best kinds to get?

Thanks,

Eric

For the most part I don't think you should use any additive unless you have a test kit to make sure you're dosing appropriately. I'd stay away from iodine especially unless you are testing for it, because it can be toxic if you add too much. Most tanks can use extra calcium, but again you need to be testing for it to know how much you should add.

A small amount of phyto will work for your feather duster. For them, pretty much any type will do, you just want to be careful that you don't overdo it, because phyto is very rich, and most if it will go to waste.

I agree that you probably shouldn't dose anything unless you can test for it, I also don't think you will really need to dose anything in a fish only tank as long as you are doing regular water changes. Water changes alone should be enough to keep your levels in check since you shouldn't have much of a demand without corals. You may want to test for calcium and alkalinity and use a 2 part additive to keep them up, this will help with coraline growth as well. Skip

Thanks Guys, I will hold off on adding anything for now.

I have been testing the calcium level and it is fine, well that is what the test said.
