hey dj
i was thinking with all the new set-ups and original designs coming out these days and all those awesome pics i've seen people posting lately, maybe you could do a tank of the month thing.......not really a contest neccessarily you know - just a HEY CHECK THIS OUT page!!! and i know maybe some would think "hey what about my tank" but i think that highlighting some of these builds on a front page would give others, especially newbees, who think their best option is some prefab kit reef - just open the box and add water........ is their best option when most of those things are just a mod and a prob waiting to happen. you could do a real service to some beginner about to lay out money for one of those tanks. there are many posters such as rip, reef, pirate, dickie, sadie and a whole bunch of others that come to mind, that have recently posted very simple (well i guess in the case of pirate simple is a relative term :))but awesome new set-ups that have some real nice designs that started with a simple tank and put their money (and experience) where it was needed. like i said it may be hard not to offend someone but i think this could help our hobby out????????? what do ya think? and if you do it monthly well everyone can have a chance if they want it anyway right???? JMO :)

I REALLY LIKE THIS IDEA! And not just because I was one of the mentioned members, but because of your comment about "prefab" kits being seen as one of the only ways. I think that highlighting some various systems is a GREAT idea!

As I read your post, the first thing to pop into my head was reefcentral.com and their "Featured Tank Of The Month" that they do. I think this would be a huge plus for the site.

Just my $0.02...

Yep I think this is a great idea. The innovation of this hobby is what really makes it great.

We've got some pioneers here at NT it'd be cool to showcase em.

What is your idea for documenting the systems? Start to finish? Already established systems? DIY buildups?

i really have no idea, let the tank owner decide - discuss the build what you like what could be better........whatever, you and reefmans 20's are great examples of what a couple holes and some pvc can do for you.........choice of lighting and why, flow through and refuges/sumps........ stand pipes, closed loops, filtration, skimmers, stands and other components?? what a reef tank needs and what is just money spent and needing to re-buy something else - basically why a build your own allows for so many more options then all those prefabs and in the long run will meet your needs and the needs of your animals in care far better..... i don't know - just me thinking out loud after seeing so many post of how do i fix this about my prefab nano ........

Maybe the forum could focus on unique tanks with a few pics and descriptions of each. Home made tanks would definitely be at home here.

I hear you John. So more of a detailed explanation as to the functionality of each mod or componant and what is accomplished by the design. So instead of a "Hey look at me" type of deal like at RC. The real focus is for people to learn the science, reasoning, and specific funcionalities behind certain methods and the "how to".

I think this is a great idea. I browse allot of sites and none go out of their way to spotlight systems like this.

Good idea John.

well said rip - exactly what i was thinking - a "how i did it and why" guide for beginners - not just showing off a pretty tank

and skipm i like your twist as well - maybe the first post could be just a brief account of 5 or 6 set-ups and then later entries go into details and specifics

That is a Great Idea!!! I could have used something like this when I started up! I went and bought an aquapod 12 and after it cycled moved everything to a 20L, because I had more options! This would be great! Good ideas!

I think this is a good idea also. Actually, I was hoping to maybe inspire a new tank or two when I started posting the Pirate's Reef thread. I get a lot of enjoyment seeing other people's tanks and I like unique DIY set ups. Nano tanks present a great creative opportunity, without spending too much money. I think a lot of people are just afraid to try something on their own, because they just don't know what is involved. A lot of this stuff is not that difficult, if you just have someone show you the way and point you in the right direction. Putting the spotlight on some of these systems and how they were put together and how they work could be an inspiration to people to come up with even more creative ideas.

sounds like a great idea as of today i've learned a lot just reading jesse's post found it to be extremely informative :!: as a newbe I was going to only go the prefab unit im still staring w/ one but now plan also to build a larger system using what i've learned on this site but wish there were more options to look at to see what would best suit my idea of the perfect tank
we need more people to think outside of the box if we ever expect to grow in our knowledge being that nanoing is ( a small world) pardon the pun   but I do believe we all still :!: no matter how long we have been involved in reefing have something to learn as well as teach our fellow reefers I myself am thankful to you all for what I have learned now I feel I have a place that I feel I can receive the honest help one needs to be truelly successful @ starting my own reef
