5.5 Gallon Update

Hi Reefers -

It has been a while since I have posted. Here is an update of my 5.5 gallon nano tank. This tank uses a Rio 50 for circulation, an Aquaclear HOB filter with mechanical and chemical filtration. There is 12lbs of Tonga Branch live rock for bio filtration. There is a tiny 25w heater and the lighting is a 70w Metal Halide 20K Astralux bulb. This tank was started on 5/15/2005.

My setup is as follows:

All Glass 5.5
AquaClear 20 HOB filter with sponge and ESV Carbon
Rio 50 PH for circulation
Theo 25w heater (too weak)
12 pounds Tonga Branch LR
70w Metal Halide with AstraLux double ended 20K bulb
2 80mm computer fans in hood, with blue LED's for moonlights

how far do you hang the metal halide?

Well, it is not hung. It sits about 4 inches from the water surface.

any overheating issues with the 70w metal halide? I have one coming in the mail.

My tank has not gone over 82 degrees. This was the hottest it got during this summer.

evaporation problems? You have it sitting on legs? Thats how mine will be setup. Also bought that new fission nano skimmer. Thing works excellent. www.nanotuners.com

Yes, I use a gravity feed auto top off. It uses about 1.5 gallons per 7 days. Evap is worse now that winter is here. During summer, evap was about .75 - 1 gallon every 7 days.
