So a 29g would only really hold about 15g of water...and the sump would add 20. But that 20g isn't exactly a swimming area either. I can't decided on what I plan on doing just yet. I'm stuck between size of the tank, what I want in it, and the different equipment I can have. lol

actually you loose about 3% (on a 1/8" wall tank). I can't see how you can loose 9g of water displacement with sand and live rock. Most equipment can hold more water than is displaces, like a skimmer or a HOB filter. And if you actually filtered your sand, you will find that its total footprint in your tank isn't void of water. Water does flow through your sand bed, even in an anaerobic state. I'm willing to bet that your 15g tank holds closer to 10-12g of actual water.

I meant that a 29g would loose about half, which would be only 15g of swimming area...according to The Kapenta Kid. I can see his point. And that a 20g sump would add more water, but not swimming area. Sorry, I should have made a bit more clearer. :)

Oh it does displace some amount of water. If you put in a 6" deep sand bed it doesn't displace the entire 6" volume of water. There is still water that flows between the grains of sand. The amount that it displaces is relative to the grain size of the sand.

Sorry for so many questions, I'm still new to the marine world. I have definitely learned a lot from all of you! And before I buy or do anything, I want to know as much as possible. That way I'm not leaving any detail out. I figure the more informed I am, the better my decisions on my tank and livestock.[/img]

Don't apologize..... That's why they created this form. You figured correctly, better informed is just better. however I've learned that some mistakes your just going to have to make before you can really see the significance of it and the impact it will make on the tank.

Ask as many questions as you can think of and learn as much as possible, but don't let it get you down when you do make a mistake.

Mistakes are good to me. I just want to be able to start up the tank and actually get to a mistake...lol But I have decided on a tank size. I'm going to keep it smaller than what I originally wanted, but I know this way I'm able to keep up with expenses. I'm heading in the direction of a 10g glass biocube. Preferably by JBJ. Maybe some zoos and a fish. As I've heard that zoos and mushrooms are good for beginners.

That is probably a smart decision. I started with a 12 gallon 5 months ago and now I have that and a 60 gallon that a friend gave me for free. I also can't afford to fill either of them up with coral becuase I had to fill the 60 with LR. Not cheap. Anyway shrooms and Zoos are really cool looking but make sure you get a good light fixture on that thing becuase even they won't thrive if your under lit. my 12 has a horrible light fixture and the zoos didn't grow at all in it. I moved them into my 60 a month ago and they are thriving because of the light upgrade. Last make sure you decide what fish you really want because in a 10 gallon your only gonna get one possibly two depending on your choice.

I was going by the Sticky in one of the forums about what size tank goes with what fish. I was going to get a citron goby. I have a poll up now of the tank I'm interested in. Please visit!

I don't know much about various fish but the above link doesn't bode well for your choice of tank.


how about a yellow watchman? This is a nanotanker with a 6.6 gallon.

The tank looks like it could be cool but you probably won't want to put a fish in it. Other people will chime in, but decide what fish you want and get a tank that will work with that fish or change the fish if your not that picky.

this is where it mentions that a 2.5 pico through a 3 can keep 1 fish either a citron goby or a green banded goby. 5g can keep a damsel, and in the 7g section it includes the 6g tanks where it then recommends clowns...I looked at Damsels and decided against those. I really don't like clowns either.... that's my reasoning for a Citron Goby. Not to say you are wrong, because I've looked them up too and a lot of people prefer larger tanks for them. But if I can get away with one, that would be my choice. I'm fine with just keeping reefs too though.

Like I said I don't really know that much about fish yet. If people say you can do it then go for it. This hobby is really based on opinions anyway.

just get it, take pictures and share already. stop procrastinating. :lol3:
