MH would probably be your best bet if you can afford it. Most folks get into this hobby at first by utilizing cheaper power compact lighting. Sometime down the line, they soon realize that they wish they had just spent the extra couple hundred on MH so they aren't restricted as to what kinds of corals they can keep.

There are pros and cons of both types of lighting senarios. You just need to research and see whats best for you.

What kinds of coral do you plan to keep? Any clams or SPS?

??

i was thinking some colony polyp, candy cane coral, button polyp.i am thinking of satellite compact fluorescent fixture 65 watt-1 lunar light.for only 59.49-67.99 depending on if i need a 24 or 20 inch light. This is for my 29 gallon tank im planning for some live rock,my lfs i have only seen them with medium to large rocks (hole). For i think $215 i can get all i need at dr foster site as they got new fowlr kit that comes with alot for that price.Plus the stuff i already got from my freshwater.Whatda u think?????????????????????????????????????/

:D :D :)

For a 29 gallon you should definitely get more than just the single 65W PC. The 130 would allow you to keep softies and maybe an LPS or two higher up in the tank but I would just like to echo dj's opinion. I started w/ 130W of PC above my 18G tank and wish I would have gone MH. I am now looking into getting a MH pendant to add to my tank and wish I would have just started w/ MH but oh well.

I am upgrading to a 30G cube and am definitely going to have to have MH by then to keep what I want. I think you should go w/ MH but you could get by on PC's as long as you realize you are probably going to upgrade to MH at one point if you stick w/ this hobby for awhile.

130w would be enough for you to keep most LPS, softies, mushrooms, and zoos.

You won't really be able to keep SPS, and I think clams and anemones are a bad idea until you're tank has been up for at least a year for the tank to mature, and for you get the experience necessary to keep these fragile animals.

65w would be enough for you to keep some softies and mushrooms and maybe some zoos near the top, but I'd skip it and go with at least the 130w.

If you watch the boards for used MH setups you might be able to pick one up that would allow you to keep a wider range of livestock

stay away from the orbit/satellite pc setups. They have no legs.

Id do a MH and if that is too expensive, look into a a coralife PC fixture. They are pretty cheap on ebay and there are tons of them to choose from.

Yep...But t-5s are more efficient than PC's and have a slightly better par value, so they're somewhat comparable in a very loose fashion. Really it's comparing apples to oranges though.

if you can spare the cash, the new and cool MH is the coralife 150w with 20k bulb. wholla, you'd be good for anything. the item is totally self contained and looks just great.

Hey I recommend you getting MH so that if down the road you decide to keep sps and clams you already have the proper lighting. I have a 24 gal. JBJ Nano Cube with a custom build hood with 250WATT MH that I got from MARINE Madness, an ebay based store. I paid $189.99 including free shipping for a ready to plug & paly system. Here is the link were I got my system, I highly recommend this guys.

my plans are to save, save, save and get what i need in the long run rather then upgrade later(i would hate to do that).i know if im in a petstore too long i will buy more than what i wanted to begin with. i spent alot of time reading posts, articles, and asking questions so i know im ready. now i give advice to ppl that are new to the hobby(like me).
