update: i forgot to add that since i will be keeping mushrooms and other low light corals i refigured my lights. currently my buld set only 3 inches from the surface. my hood is 4.5" from the surface but my bulbs hang down. i didnt figure that in. now they will sit 6 inches from the surface.

i have ordered my acrylic vho bulb holder this way i dont screw the end caps into the hood 12 times and still not get it right. I have the hood together, stained the out side and painted the insided a high gloss white last night. today ill add 2 coats of thick varnish to the outside and inside. add the hindge the seal pad to the front since it has a bow to it and a slight gap do to my mis measurement. Im going to Best buy to buy one more 4 inch computer fan and ill mount 2 fans in the back of the canopy fan one blowing in and one blowing out. This droped my temp last time almost 4 degrees. Plus my lights will be 6 inches from the surface. Im even putting knobs on the hood.

okay i got it set up but when i starting pumping water the tank just filled up with water and the overflow didnt flow right and the tank spilled over. any suggestions why? since i drilled the back top i just used a 90 pvc for my dorso like thing. could air be getting traped? the whole pvc goes under water. Also i drilled 4 break syphon holes and they dont work. my sump overflows still! how much flow restriction would i get if i used a 1/2" check valve when i plumbed with 1" pvc? the stores that carry swing valves are over a hour away and i cant up and go and my coarls have been on the floor since saturday and i need to get them in the tank.

You aren't showing a pic of the complete plumbing system so its hard to say but 1st thought is just too much pump - too little hole. Or if it is an air problem then you could maybe have a "T" coming out the back of your bulkhead one end down to the sump and one end up into the air to ensure good draw - kinda like the same idea as venting the plumbing in your house so it flows right. It may cause some water flow noise though. And as far as your sump you should always leave it low enough so that if you have a power outage it doesn't overflow. Mine is always about half full to catch draw down water if the pumps aren't running.

i figured my problem. I built a external durso but my pump is way to big for my overflow. my pump is rated at 700gph. it pumps the chamber dry quickly. can any one suggest a pump rate for about 300 gph? I had a fellow reefer come over and help. he was useing the next pump size up on his 180

Answered over at RC too. Install a ball or gate valve inline with the Quiet One to restrict the flow a bit, or replace the Quiet One with a Mag 5.

hehe! just posted on there to. i decided to go with a smaller pump. this pump is just way to large. i think a quiet one 1200 (296 gph) will do a lot better. Less heat transfer. downside is i have to re-plumb my return from 1" to 1/2 since this pump is 1/2 inch or i guess i could just use a coupleing from a 1/2 to a 1" right? with the 1200 pump accorrding to RC calculator with all my loss i'll have 250 gph wich will be more than 10x the turn over rate. with 600 gph even chocked back ill have to much. I think chocking it back might make the motor produce to much extra heat.

actually yeah. its up and running. Not very well mind you but it works. I really hate the flow but looks like im stuck with it. I finally added the new hood which is taller than my old one making the lights sit 6" from the surface. I have some corals in there now. yellow polyps, green tree coral, hairy mushrooms, mushroom, eagle eye zoas, gsp, and a encrusting monti. the monti had some tissue loss but has fully recovered. main reason i did my thank like this was to keep any thing from the back but now i have a power head in there and im about to hang my skimmer on there. Ill get pics later tonight and post tomorrow.

After meeting puma and trading i got a nice purple monti. It was browned out but it looks to have purplish hugh now. I also got some spaghetti worms. Last night while looking at the tank i also got a bonus some micro stars.
After meetin puma i went to TFD because i was looking for a BTA. Meet the new guy seems friendly by the way.
they had a rose BTA for $39 and a green BTA with pink tips for $29.
I went with the green. when it was in the tank and baged it looked to be golf ball size maybe slightly bigger. once in my tank it was Softball size! after finding a nice spot it settled in. the next moring it was all shriveld. Of course my last BTA did this then died so i was freaking. i threw in some mysis real quick and left the house. about 6 hours later when i came home it was big as can be. :D I was so releived. (if it would of died i would never add another) I feed the tank and of course it caught all the food (that wasnt planed) ate it all and fell over it was so full.

okay just felt like telling every one about my new scores. Ill get some pics tonight.
