Those are some good links Ed, I do want to point out that the offset in the third link will cause alot of flow loss because of the elbows but if that isn't a problem for you then it will work great. I haven't looked at the thread where all of the links came from in awhile, it appears I have missed alot.

I think this is kind of a bottleneck that reduces flow but increases pressure which causes the splashing. While breaking the surface appears to be beneficial, the splashing on the splashguard is no good. In one of the links ED posted, a guy used the stock outlet tube and glued it to the hydor flow. Not only did this shorten the neck and make it less intrusive looking, the larger stock tubing means more flow and less pressure....he reported no splashing. I'm going to try that this weekend. I'll post pics and results when I do it. For now, it's ED's setup like in the picture, but with a ziptie to hold it on.

So I have 0's all across the board except nitrates which is dropping like crazy (it was down to 10 today) and I'm starting to get alot of brown algae. (i think some of that green hair algae too) I'm wondering if it's a good idea to do the first water change at this point? If so, how much should I change? If the nitrates drop more tomarrow, do you think it'll be safe to add the start of my cleanup crew?

Oh, and I have decided on the 2 fish I want in there once everything is more stable. I know there are mixed feelings on them in a nano but I'm going to try and get a pair of mandarins. Providing I can find a small pair that can take some sort of pellet or frozen food. Since these will be the only fish, I don't need to worry about them being bullied or starved by competition for food. I know it might take awhile to find the perfect pair but hey, time is what we all have =)

EDDY, I'm definatly using the same pieces. They fit together real tight but the whole setup keeps coming off the outlet. I'll post pics tomorrow.

On the mandarins, don't think I'm going at it too soon or blindly. I've read every thread and website dedicated to them that I could find. I understand their needs and I won't add them until 1.) the tank is ready for them with plenty of pods, more LR, and a pod pile to ensure the pod population can be maintained and 2.) I find a pair that is already taking other frozen/pellet/etc foods. I know some people say they will survive on brine I'm not a big fan of sea monkeys....I think of them as lettuce.....a filler food with little to no nutrients. That is why I want to make sure the ones I pick up are already eating other sustainable foods.

What do you think about me doing a water change now?

the show begins...

Did the water change, brought the nitrates down and I added 2 reef hermits, 2 nasserus snails, and 2 peppermint shrimp last night....

right before I went to sleep I saw a hermit ditch it's shell and go after one of the snails (the LFS didn't have extra shells so I'm going out to get some today) The snail was about to be killed when one of the shrimp came out of hiding and made quick work of the exposed hermit =O

This morning I found some hermit remains....gonna remove those....but one of the aiptasia anemones is definatly gone...the peppermint shrimp do work! Now I just better hope they get the other one. I've got waaaay too much brown algae so I'm going to reduce the lighting period....I also found a cute little feather duster hitchhiker on one of the rocks.

Thats why I only got 2 of them =P If you still have them available, I'll take them off your hands. Believe me...my tank needs it. All my LR is furry brown rock at the moment....I was planning on cutting back the lighting until...well, read below and you'll see I didn't get much say in the matter.

BTW, do you have electricity at your place? My power went out at 1pm and I had to use ice to maintain temperature in my tank.....it's 1:30am and it's still dead!! (staying at the rents house right now) What gives?!!! :cryinga:
