10 gallon Microreef

I started a 10 gallon tank and wanted some help. The tank is about two weeks old and has no corals. The surface has build up and foam around the sides. I am using a Fluval C3 for filtration. How do I remove the film on the water and the foam on the sides?

Small Styrofoam cup or paper towel. With the later, I would just lie it on the surface and it would skim the top layer onto the paper towel.

Repeat process until the surface area is free of scum.
