Alkalinity and Calcium (+ stocking Q's)

Hermit crab died? Or did it molt? The molts can look like a dead hermit.....check to see if he is still around somewhere, assuming that you are going by a "carcass" that he left behind. Otherwise, I would do a 10-20% water change to help with any other issues that may lurk. PS: Be careful if...

    how long befor i can

Add things one at a time. Sometimes a fish can add a lot of ammonia for 2 reasons - More uneaten food and more waste. If your tank handles the addition of the clown and maintains stable levels, then a week later you could start adding some soft corals, mushrooms, etc. Just not too many at a...

    Problems with Overflow

It sounds like your tank is merely generating waste at the surface, which is typical. Do you have any sort of protein skimmer? If not, get an actual skimmer or you can easily buy/make surface skimmer that fits over the intake. http://www.jbjlighting.com/images/nano_ ... kimmer.jpg

True Story!!!!! MURDER at 12G Nano Dr.!!!!

Yeah, the molts look like dead bodies. You will even see some meat flapping in the breeze. First few of those and I thought my cleaners were gone. After counting shells I realized that they were all accounted for. Breathe easy Tony!

New with 12 g Nano. Have qs

I would say that the temp could be a major issue for you in the long run. Saltwater tanks should be in the 26-28 degree celsius range (78-82 F). That could have contributed to the shrimp's demise. They also need lots of places to hide......adding some rock rubble could help if you only have a...

New with 12 g Nano. Have qs

I completely agree with Tim. Not only can calupera melt away and spike your levels in a hurry, it can create the need for an underwater john deere if it is not monitored and plucked on a regular basis. Depending on the size of the "nano" tank, 3 fish could be overstocking it. At 20 gallons, you...

Sea Clone Protein Skimmers - For the record

Contrary to all of the prior advice, we purchased a Sea Clone 100 Protein Skimmer (Sea Clown, affectionately)for my 30 Gal Cube aquarium. Initially, we had a heck of a time adjusting it so it would produce skimmate. We heard everything from "Your tank is too new, it may not have a big Bio load"...

    Help ID this algae/seaweed growth......

Hi all, I have a green star polyp rock that has some reddish/burgundy leafy growth on one end. I have looked all over the internet and it seems like it could be some strain of red seaweed. The unknown plants are fairly small at this point and appear to be burgundy translucent leafy growths...

Will this work??? Need help adding fish etc..

Definitely take it sloooooowly. Otherwise, you will sacrifice animals. Clowns are not technically recommended for less than 20 gallons. Perhaps one would be ok but I would not recommend it. Once you feel your tank reasonably stable, add some clean up crew. You will be surprised how feeding them...

    Another Cycling question, hooray!!!

Things sound like they are progressing fine. Following that minor ammonia spike, I would watch your levels closely over the next week.....check them every other day. If you maintain 0.0 Nitrites, 0.0 Ammonia and Nitrates less than 40 ppm, then I would say you are ready for the next step (a few...

Lighting problem on a Nano 12 DX

Is there a "starter" in the set up? The starter is a small cylinder with 2 round prongs on it. It would be sticking out of the inner side of the hood and you can remove it by twisting/pushing at the same time. This jumps the power to "start" the bulb. The starter may have gotten fried also.

    Another Cycling question, hooray!!!

The key is that your tank can convert nitrites to ammonia and ammonia to nitrates. If you set up that tank, put in live rock and added full lighting, you may not get a complete "cycle". Curing live rock is an intentional thing that can be done in your existing tank or in a separate tub. If you...

    New tank cycling

Wow, that is high. Nitrates are the end of the cycle.........Ammonia=>Bacteria=> Nitrite=>Bacteria=>Nitrate. The good news is that it sounds like you have completed the cycle but the nitrates are extremely high. I would say that you follow the water change advice. In a new tank, there is...
