    Water changing question.....

Remember, water changes in nano's serve two purposes. 1. Nutrient export 2. Trace element replenishment Used water is full of nutrients, and low on trace elements. That's why we toss it. Some people use waste water to cycle a tank, but that is it. Never use it when livestock is present.

    Water changing question.....

Do you mean to recycle your water? Why do you suppose you are doing the water changes in the first place?

How do I get this out of my tank? Pic included

That looks like a species of Bryopsis. Mechanical removal and prevention is your best bet. Tough to get rid of. Don't get a tang. I bought a LM blenny for that purpose and he wouldn't touch the stuff. Trust me, been though this.

    Protien Skimmer

If you keep up with large water changes like 10% weekly, then you really don't need one. For larger tanks they are necessary, but nanos can be kept without skimmers if you follw a schedule like this.

    Protien Skimmer

It removes organic compounds in your tank before they can fuel the nitrogen cycle. If used properly, can reduce the need for water changes and/or increase your tank's available bioload.

It buffers alk and doses calcium.

    Hermit Crab Housing

Go to your local pet store and they probably have extras lying around that you can get for free or near-free. I pay 10 cents apiece for extra shells. If I buy stuff, they are free.

    Cleaning Crew

I would go with a peppermint to start. I swear by them. Good scavenger, great at controlling aiptasia and they are the cheapest so if you make any rookie mistakes, you are not out the cash. Don't get pairs unless you are sure they are a mated pair. This rule applies to mostly anything you...

I quite like hermits. they get in the nooks and crannies that snails don't.

Coral banded shrimp can be very aggressive. Not good if you plan on having other shrimp, or small docile fish. CUC= clean up crew

IMO, with the CUC packages, you get alot of stuff you don't need. You don't want a bunch a exotic shrimp, conches, cucumbers and crabs when your tank is just starting up and fluctuating. Get maybe 10 dwarf hermits, a dozen nassarius snails, a dozen astrea/cerith/trocchus snails. Don;t get too...

Filters, Power Heads and my new Fluval

With nothing else alive in the tank, you should be okay. With all that shrimp, dead fish, and LR it might just take a while to process, but it will with time.

Filters, Power Heads and my new Fluval

Bag or plastic container, it doesn't matter. Confined space where ammonia is allowed to build up over time is the key. Food placed in the water at 80 degrees would start to decompose immediately, and if he ate anything he would foul his own water. If shipping fish, most LFS's would not feed...

Filters, Power Heads and my new Fluval

Yeah, my bet would be that ammonia did this little guy in, especially if you put food in the bag while he was acclimating. Don't worry we have all made rookie mistakes. Just don't put anything else living in the tank until trItes and ammonia are zero and trAtes are as close to 0 as possible...

    water change

Personally I don't aerate or circulate my water for changes. I just shake the hell out of it before I change it. I do let it sit for 24 hours because I do notice a slight change in SG between when I add the mix and it sits for 24 hours. I use TM too. The frustrating thing about cheaper RO...

    water change

Temperature really won't affect your salinity. Dissolved solids will not precipitate out unless you get the water darn near boiling. For a few degrees difference, and for all intents and purposes in aquaria, the change is negligible. Density of water is amazingly consistent between freezing...

Filters, Power Heads and my new Fluval

A two hour acclimation is WAY too much. 15 minutes tops for a hardy little guy like that is all I would do. Trapped ammonia in the bag could have compromised his gills, and he could be struggling for oxygen rather than for excess flow. the stress of bsing bagged is very damaging so minimize...

    Test question

Do not dose with ammonia, that is a fresh water trick for tanks w/o LR or sand. If using uncured LR, no need to add anything, let the rock do the work.
