Any suggestions for a DIY peltier chiller???

I'd prefer not to leave the tank or sump open b/c of evaporation. My theory is that I can get the chiller onto some sort of homemade switch that only turns it on as nec. My big issue is what do I run the water thru and affix the cooler to. Are there any metals that can be used with Saltwater...

Any suggestions for a DIY peltier chiller???

The entire (poss) water system would be about 18 Gall (tanl + sump) Could be a bit less when considering live sand and rock. Lighting on the tank is a 32W PC fixture and fuge has a 13W PC Galaxy II. Powerhead is a Rio 1100 (23W I believe). The room can get pretty warm in the summer...

    Is this tank workable?

My daughter is 8 now. Two years ago her teacher bought everyone in the class a fish as a going away present. I met a few families at Walmart buying cheap tanks just like we were. We heard from others that within a week the vast majority of these feeder goldfish were dead. I let the fish be...

    will my tank cycle

I was more concerned with cycling the tank thru than the amount of rock I need to keep regularly. I can always remove rock later and give it to a friend. After the cycling process completes its first phase I'll prob. remove most or all live rock from the fuge as it will only get things...

    will my tank cycle

How much live rock is nec. (and what's too much)? My Nano is only 9 Gallons but the fuge/sump is 10G. On larger tanks I've seen suggestions of 1-1.4 lbs per gallon. Does that still hold true here? Does 20lbs of rock seem excessive? Thanks.

Any suggestions for a DIY peltier chiller???

Hi folks. I thought I'd post this to get some suggestoins from and of you DIYers out there. I recently came across this Peltier Cooler and thought I'd buy one to tinker around with. The photo is cute but using a copper or aluminum pipe seems to be out of the question for saltwater tanks...

    Is this tank workable?

Well, I thought I would do the goldfish a favor but I made a big mistake. (To add insult to injury, my wife had no interest in a bigger tank and told me I'd kill my daughters her fish.) The goldfish seemed to be doing OK and was eating in his new & pretty tank but I woke up this...

    will my tank cycle

This brings up a good question... What actually causes a tank to cycle? I was considering setting up a new Nano tank myself and was wondering if I needed to do that whole cycling thing. I was considering asking the guy I get the live rock and corals from for some added water and trying to...

How to startup a Nano tank?

Now that all the various parts of my Nano tank are on oder I thought I'd ask some fairly basic questions. I was a bit surprised not to find a sticky for these so if the info is somewhere out there please feel free to offer up some URLs. Question #1 - Startup of a Nano system Does the...

    Is this tank workable?

I thought I'd put this up to a vote... Some quick background: While doing my research on an acrylic nano I'm building I came across an ebay auction I couldn't resist for a super cheap 6 Gallon Glass tank. (The thing only cost me $37 shipped, incl light and powerhead!!!). Before people...

Any suggestions for me befome I start building my Nano?

someone had suggested the 1" bulkhead to me, but I alsothought it to be a bit on the large side considering the size of the tank (and personally I wasn't on planning for an overflow that wide). A 3/4" bulkhead still requires a pilot hole over 1" in diameter. I was curious if perhaps I could...

    Choosing plants/critters for a 10G fuge?

NOt what I would have though. I suppose I'm glad I asked the question. As far as algae growing on the fuge walls, I think I'd be scared that it will filter into the main tank and end up on the walls there, no? The theory was that the algae would hopefully filter out of the main tank and get...

    Choosing plants/critters for a 10G fuge?

Hi, I thought I'd try a quick post to ask for suggestions for my upcoming nano tank. The tank itself will be a desktopper and slightly under 9 gallons. Having said that, I bought a 10G glass tank to be my sump/fuge (I wish I could have had a 200G sump from my last 150G tank). Anyhow, the...

Any suggestions for me befome I start building my Nano?

I posted this on RC but I thought that perhaps this might be a better place to get advice since I'll have more Nano-reefers to give input. Thanks. ----- OK, I thought I'd try a quick post before I go to the acrylic store and do some shopping. I'm planning a Nano tank that will sit...

    Chad's 2gal bulletproof zen tank

Ninja, Yes, you likely should start another thread about your new build project. I think we'd all be interested in seeing what you'll come up with next. Having tinkered with Plexi myself in the past I'm thinking about building my own tank but still trying to weigh all my options and learn...

Old dog asking for new tricks...

    I'm still thinking about the DIY thing as I expect that the plexi I have, plus whatever more I need to get, would still come out cheaper than buying a tank. I've been contemplating three setups. 1. 9 x 9 x 16high (5.61Gal) 2. 12 x 12 x12 (7.48Gal) - same as ninja I believe 3. 15L x 9Deep x...

Old dog asking for new tricks...

sound's like a good place to start. Back when I had a tank last we hung a huge metal halide pendant over our 35 gallon reef. It was high up so we really didn't have to worry about the heat it created or get special chillers for the water. Any opinions about PC lights vs halides? I know...

Old dog asking for new tricks...

Hi, I thought I'd post this in the beginners area as I'm considering my first attempt at a nano/pico reef. Having gotten that out of the way, I feel that I'm somewhat well versed in keeping reef aquariums in general though I'd like to find out 'what's changed'. My father and I had two...
