mine had a problem also....my peppy's. they do alright now cause i suppliment iodine. the reason for mine having the problem was due to the low iodine level. havent had a problem since. hope this helps somewhat.

i had a bunch of problems with my EC. when he got larger he killed three fish, couple hermits, and some snails. at the time i didnt realize it because it happened at night, but i caught him three times before i evicted him. my fish would swim through his hole and wham he got them. great crabs...

single ones will do fine but i have also heard that having them in pairs are better. a bunch of ppl on here have single ones and paired, i havent read anything about problems with them. good luck
