    is garlic enough for me?

p.s. water tests fine, nitrate is pretty minimal, did a water change yesterday morning. i have some diatomaceous algae, but gravel and rocks are clean of gunk. do i dare try a freshwater dip? that scares the heck out of me, and i don't really have a quarantine tank...thank again! i've attached a...

    is garlic enough for me?

hey kids, shame on me for being absent and only coming back when i have a problem, but time flies when the reef tank is happy! two weeks ago i added a royal gramma, and he was one happy kid, eating everything like a Hoover. Still have an orangespot goby and a boring pajama cardinal. i noticed...

this is what i get for feeling confident!

ugh. in the last two weeks i lost a shrimp and two hermy crabs. No big whoop on the crabs, i know red-legged don't live long. The shrimp? No clue. The other two were fine, but darker in color. They molt regularly. No, I don't test for Iodine because it's too darn expensive and without the test...

Take 2: feeding tricks for new wrasse?

ok. so it's been 8 days. last night, the wrasse came out for a bit, shocking me away from a hockey game. He seemed to flounder in the current by the filter intake, and I'm hoping it was just from current. (that, or from laying under a rock for the last week). he made it to a rock on the other...

Don't have a nano anymore but I still wanted to post pics...

LOVE the pics! especially love the fish pics, they enhance the personality and character of the fish, I think having close-ups of my fish would make them even more real, almost "human" as odd as that sounds. i wish i could take close-ups like this! i really need a new camera.

Take 2: feeding tricks for new wrasse?

Got a lovely Lubbock's Fairy Wrasse two days ago. At least, he was lovely when i saw him in the store tank; I haven't seen him since! I know they hide for a while when they're new, that's not what worries me. I'm just not sure how to check if he's getting any food? it's hard to get frozen food...

    man-eating tree coral

I decided I didn't really want the second trunk to grow in the same place as the main piece; wanted it on two different sides of the tank. so i took a sharp razor blade and cut off the second trunk. i think i should have taken it out of the water, since it was sort of rubbery in and it wasn't a...

    man-eating tree coral

my Kenya tree coral is growing so well he’s outgrowing the base he came on and his "feet" are starting to overlap its sides. Should I find a place to put him that he can spread parallel to his base? Do I have to worry about him flopping over? I’m wondering if I should move him lower in the tank...

    bio cube skimmer

ditto. i have the air pump turned almost all the way down, since I was getting nothing but a collection cup full of water, and though the skimmer fizzes, it doesn't foam up nor send any organics into the cup. However, it's still good for aeration, since salt water holds so much less oxygen.

Has anyone flipped one fan around on their Nanocube?

i actually tried this when i first got my nanocube, as one fan was noisy (called and they told me it had bad bearing and sent me a new one). i didn't notice a temp change either way in the tank, but I think having one in and out helps the lamps themselves from overheating? i know the guy at...

    Mushroom Rock

i had a tiny fragment of rock chip of my zooanthid when it was being transported, and tossed it in the tank anyway, it's hysterical, since it's laying in the middle of the sand and tiny little mushroom guys popped out! i dare say they are cute! they are pretty darn versatile and resilient given...

    unhappy xenia-sudden onset

i hadn't moved it at all, and didn't want to since I like where it is and it was doing well. i knew it had to be something relatd to me cleaning the tank. my guess is perhaps a piece of gravel got in there. i walked in the door after work wednesday and it was back, as good as ever! like i said...

    unhappy xenia-sudden onset

ack! my beautiful blue xenia is all closed up and shrunken! actually, a small part of it is fine, but the rest closed today. it's been fine since i got it 2 months ago, and actually growing. i did a water change this morning, only a gallon or so, and re-added reef plus and some calcium. when i...

aiptasia on glass or something else?

ok, so as i said, i panic easily. i called my pet store guy and he thinks they're copies, particularly since they're moving and don't seem to have any hairy appendages. so thanks in advance, but i think i'm ok for now. i still don't have fish, perhaps it's time to get one so he can eat some of...

aiptasia on glass or something else?

ok i'm in a panic because i've heard aiptasia is a nightmare. I just noticed last night my glass covered with white specks. I'm guessing the worst. I know peppermint shrimp eat them when small, but they can't climb up the glass, right? so what do i do with the ones on the glass so they don't...

where can i find shells for hermit crabs?

i've got 12 red-legged hermies and 12 blue-legged. how quickly will these crabs outgrow their shells? because i'm having a dog of a time finding empty shells to toss in there; all i can seem to find in stores or online are regular pet hermit crab shells, which are huge (for the hermies kids keep...

should mr. spaghetti worm be moved?

ok, nevermind, it seems he decided to move himself! he has now protruded his body out of the case on the rock and slithered downwards. so i couldn't move the rock if i wanted to i think. which is fine, i like it where it is! (and man, the mushroom corals look darn nifty under the actinic bulb...
