Babycakes' precious 10g Jebo and 7.5g shallow display

It's really beautiful. How do you like the black sand? I tried it for a bit in a 10g, but I couldn't keep it looking black. Detritus kept getting on it and making it look more salt/pepper. It irritated me enough that when we moved I dumped it out, and didn't restart it. B

    20 Gallon High

Sorry about the bass, that sucks...I've lost a few fish that way on my open top tanks. The last one was my dwarf lion. Your tank is really looking good btw. B

Yep, that's the best way to go about it. I just wanted to make sure. You're asking a lot of questions, so I figured it'd be a good idea to check. There've been a lot of folks that come over from fresh water that just float the fish for 20mins then put them in, and then wonder why the fish are...

    Sandsifting star....

 It's usually a very tight race to see which one of us will answer any given question first. I also don't think we've disagreed about much. We also often supplement each others answers. I'm actually looking forward to johnanddawn being on a lot as well, cause I think he's a good...

    pc light for 7 gal

You can fabricate a pipe or conduit stand/hanger over the tank that starts on the ground and just arcs over the tank if you're concerned with putting holes in the walls. It should be relatively cheap and easy. I think there were pics on here earlier of one. I'll poke around and see if I can...

    18g Setup with many questions

You've got a lot of nice pieces/shapes of rock there, but for a reef tank you should be starting with 18-36lbs of rock. I generally go with 1-1.5lbs of rock per gallon and make up the rest with the rock the corals come attached too. I think you're off to a great start. I really like the...

    calcium

I've never got mine high enough to make it precipitate out. I just remember enough from my chemistry labs to remember what it looks like, and have heard of it happening to reefers from time to time. More often than not when someones new and dosing heavily without testing their levels, or when...

    calcium

I believe it. I've had mine in the very high 500s a few times. The exact number where it will precipate out is somewhat variable from tank to tank, because of differences in temp, salt brands, other additives, etc... B

some new shots under my new lighting

Catalinas only die quickly because they're cold-water fish. If you chilled your tank down to the low-mid 60s, they'd probably live as long as any other fish that's available in the hobby. I love these guys and I've tried them a couple different times. But the coldest I was able to keep my...

    yellow watchman goby

Fish do sleep. They don't have eyelids. So they're eyes will be 'open'. How are you acclimating your fish? B

    18g Setup with many questions

If it'll fit over the top of the tank I'd go with it. A standard 10g tank is about a foot deep, and there's lots of folks with the 96w powerquads over them. Your tank is likely a bit deeper than that. B

    buying online fish/corals

shipping is stressful on anything, but there are lots of companies out there that know what they're doing and have really good track records. If you're thinking about one in particular you can check the feedback forum here, and I'd check the ones on reefcentral as well. I've only ordered...

    fragging sarco

You might try some live brine. If so put them in a bowl and add a bit of selcon. That way the'll actually have some nutritional value. Mine eats mysis, enriched brine, cyclopeeze, flake, pretty much anything I put in there...but I had to go the live brine route for the first few times. I...

    Sandsifting star....

Weird...I thought I'd posted a response to this right after you posted it yesterday. I think you should pass on the sandsifter. I don't think they're suitable for nanos. Period. I've had one in my larger tanks, the one in the 55 was fine for two years, and I gave it back to the LFS when I...

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. Is this with a remote ballast? Where'd you find them? B

    calcium

If it gets too high it'll precipitate back out of suspension...It'll look like it's snowing in your tank. Even then it won't really harm anything, although it's certainly not optimal. Anywhere from 400-480 is pretty standard for a reef tank. B

    filter pads/sponges in canister/hobs

Actually I don't care if you think I'm a nimrod. But posting the same question all over the board generally won't get it answered any quicker. This is a small board, and it can take a day or two to get all your questions answered when you have a bunch. I love this one because the people are a...
