Zoas

Ok if you remember from a while back I had a problem with zoas .... Not opening and they just seemed to die . Well I have since replaced them and I am still having issues , I can't seem to keep them and once they are in they open 2-3 times then stop. I have tried diffrent levels in the tank and I am perplexed as to what I may be doing wrong, I am not even able to get them to spred. Now I also had issues with red slime that seem to now be under control quite well . So I want to get some but want to wait till every thing is stable (which they seem to be now) I also want to try some of the pinks ,blues and brighter color ones just a bit afraid to buy them just to have them disappear a few weeks later .
here are the tanks perameters
72 watts pc lighting
temp 75-77.7 degrees (not much higher or lower)
spg 1.024
Ammonia 0
NitrIte 0
NitrAte 5
hi ph 8.4 lights on 8.2 lights off
weekly h20 changes 20 %
inhibatants are as follows
2 perc clowns
cleaner shrimp
multi hermits
snails turbo and nass
some micro brittle stars (tho I dont see them very often if at all)
any hints as to how to keep them and get them to thrive ? :maitre

That's very odd. Zoos are pretty darn tough and I've been known to skip acclimation and drop them right in the tank with no ill effects. I have lost a colony or two to that nasty zoo fungus.

Is there a possibility that you have a zoo predator in the tank? When they stop opening, do the polyps dissappear or just quit opening? Is there a white filmy substance in between the polyps?

I have never noticed the white filmy substance and for a predator I removed the peppy shrimp is there something else I should look for predator wise ? Usually they stop opening then a few months later disappear ?

try placing them in different locations and see what lives and what dies.

examples: some real high, some mid level, and some on the sand bed......see how they react.

Test using some cheapy ugly common brown zoo, and or whatever is alive in your tank.

yeah im having same problem here normally there are ones that they dont open really often and i tried placing them in different areas of lightning and water flow but then tend to not open just know and then... but other zoo's seems fine only some had change of color more dark or like mouths used to be bigger and know they are smaller but bright in color and is true zoos are really hardy i put some pink zoos just like that no acclimating or anything and they are doing fine i think they are really hardy cause of the weird stuff i been passing through .... when there is a problem they dont open and then week later they are looking beautifully again... tomorrow ill ask adrian and mike about some info about zoos .... color and why the dont open some times ill post answer ASAP...

Watch out for those really tiny orange zoa-eating nudis. I found some in my 20 gallon once. I caught them all eventually but they did some damage.

hi, sorry i forgot to say that the people that always help me with my corals they told me the better way to keep them and to keep them looking as great as you got them is using luigis ion and some phytoplankton and good lightning... thats all they couldnt tell me nothing else just same thing that dragon said ... try to put them somewere else or try different positions... anyways that's really bad that you keep loosing zoo's... :cryinga: your like me i dont get it everything look fine in my tank except that my shrooms look like there are gonna die and then they open and then they look bad but havent lost anything so far since i got my tank except for the blue gorgonia...
