I have one and really like him even though I almost never see him - he is in my big tank. I think a goby / shrimp pair in a small tank would be awesome. Don't know about jumping, my tank is open and he is always on the bottom under the rock in his little cubbie hole. Eggcrate would work though.

I've had my yellow watchman goby for 3 1/2 years. Awesome fish! He started out in a 6 gallon Eclipse, then moved to a 7 gallon minibow and finally to a 30 cube. He is a sand sifting fool. In fact, I have to be carefull as far as placing corals on the bottom goes, because he likes to take a mouthful of sand and sift it while he perches on my corals.

Some of his handiwork -

It is true that these guys can be jumpers, but the 7 minibow and the 30 have basically open tops and he has yet to leap out.

My kids named him Osama bin Goby a few years ago because of the network of tunnels that he created in my minibow.

Sugar, that's a killer picture!! How awesome!! Sandra (my g/f) has a bi-color blenny that does the same thing in her tank, lol

Congrats on having that little guy for almost 4 years. That's incredible life. I hope my gobies live as long as yours :)

duh-------how dumb am i------i forgot to mention---

sugar i bought the yellow goby last night --he is so cool looking. he is very small --maybe like an inch or so--i accumated him for like 2 hours--he looked stressed. once i put him in my tank -he didnt really move much but later on at night i seen him eat some sand and spitting it out(how cool!) well this morning i found more or less in the same spot--hopefully he will be fine--
i thought they like to hide under rocks but he was out in the open?
do they not move much ? he looks like a statue-lol

and let me ask you another dumb question --do fish sleep-lol i mean like do they close their eyes? or do they even have eye lids?
im dumb -sorry for the dumb question
its just when i saw my goby this morning -it was like 530 am when i was gettin ready for work-he wasnt moving-maybe he was sleeping but his eyes were open

Fish do sleep.
They don't have eyelids. So they're eyes will be 'open'.

How are you acclimating your fish?

Yep, that's the best way to go about it. I just wanted to make sure. You're asking a lot of questions, so I figured it'd be a good idea to check. There've been a lot of folks that come over from fresh water that just float the fish for 20mins then put them in, and then wonder why the fish are stresses/dying.

Watchman's are more of a perching fish rather than a free swimmer. Mine pretty much hangs out in front of his cave all day. He's got two openings, one in front of the tank, the other on the side. Really the only time he ventures much farther than his cave opening is to grab a mouthful of sand, then he scoots back toward his cave, dumping sand all over the corals.

Oh, one other thing he does that I think is hysterical, is occasionally, he'll swim up into the water and flare all his fins and opens his mouth really wide while rocking his body frontwards and backwards. It's almost like he's showing the other fish in the tank just how bad-ass he can be.

Mine has always accepted all kinds of foods, frozen, flake, pellets, and cyclop-eeze.
