Emeralds generally eat algae, so if your tank is getting low on algae you may want to supplement their diet with a suitable substitue to keep them from possibly becoming aggressive to survive.

i had a bunch of problems with my EC. when he got larger he killed three fish, couple hermits, and some snails. at the time i didnt realize it because it happened at night, but i caught him three times before i evicted him. my fish would swim through his hole and wham he got them. great crabs when they are smaller but warning when they get BIG. I picked up three last night for my 72 gallon... I'm really hoping they don't cause damage to the tank.

I owned a single one in my 12 gallon cube and it never did anything other than eat algae.
