looking for a bulb that is white in appearance. I had a 20k aquamedic but to me it took away for the color of my corals. the blueish color was just to much. I want somethng white so that every little thing with color in my tank can be noticed. The reef grow 10k I am using now makes my tank look as if the water has a brownish tint on it.
Thinking of an 070w MH - Aquamedic HQI 10000K or the Ushio HQI 10000K. Wish bulb is the better bulb?

any 10K will not stand alone asthetically - i've tried! you always need to sup with actinic to get a good color. go for a teen bulb if your looking at stand alone. 14K is a nice choice. sanjay doesn't have any 70 W tested that i know of but i have been studing and testing MH bulbs for a year now and found that 10K are great but need actinic to be asthetically pleasing. i don't think a 70W 20K would grow anything - to little PAR. if you can't find a 14 or 15 K then i would go with the ushio good rep in general....... but be prepared for the "yellow look" but i have no experience with 70Wers
here is a 14 K 70W cheap but i have no idea about quality????????

I have heard alot of stuff suggesting the 14,000k 70 watt Pheonix... illuming.com has them cheap...

You may want to look into the hamilton 10,000k 70 watt... it has a large spike in the 420nm and 460nm that will help avoid that yellowish look of alot of 10,000k lamps.

Aqualine Buschke offers a good 10,000k lamp as well.

If you are not running actinic supplementation, you will most likely be happier with the 14,000k lamps though. Your corals will fluoresce a little more and you will avoid a "yellow" tinge.

I ran the 70 watt Astra Lux from illuming.com and liked the color and growth that i saw...

I don't know if Reeflux 10000K is made in a 70watt, but if it is this is a great bulb.

The Reeflux 10000K has a large spike at 452 nm which is typical of “20000Kâ€

I looked on illuming.com and I didn't see a 70 watt Astra Lux nor the phoenix 70 watt 14000k. Only 150 watt
The only 70watt on illuimg.com is Ushio

Ushio 10k

Word of advice, stay way from anything OTHER THAN 10k in the 70w bulb area. 70w is not low, but its not high either. Going to a 12/14k bulb will give you blue, yes - but you will loose a great amount of output/par. So much, it is recommended to use two 70w if you are going with 14k bulbs.

Im gonna go with the 70w Ushio HQI 10000K. has high par value and then advertisement says it is extremely white. ebay had 1 for $58. with shipping.

That link says that the ushio is 75 watts... i dunno if that is a typo or what.

Jesse

p.s....sounds like a good deal on the Ushio Henry. My only thing is 10,000k are usually best mounted with actinics to supplement the blue spectrum that they lack.

My Ushio 70w works extremely well. Once I removed the 20k and put in the 10k, I almost immediately saw a difference in my corals. They started to open up more. Now they look like there growing and spliting. Still has slight yellow tint. Im going to try the supplement with a 13w pc actinic.

thanks shawshank and johnanddawn for your input.

just ordered the hamilton 10k. Gonna try it out. Ushio are good for growth but Im tired of the slight yellow look. need something to balance it out. I have no room to add an actinic fixture.

Man my friend has a 480 gallon lps reef. He has 2 400w 10k reeflux bulbs over it. Let me tell you the color is amazing! He doesnt even turn on his actinics anymore. 10k reeflux bulbs give off the perfect coloration. To bad they dont make 70w 10k hqi's.
