What should we do about the TOTS contest?

What should we do?

  • Start a new poll and disqualify them

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Start a new poll and tell them not to make his/her friends vote (I can monitor this)

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • Let the contest continue

    Votes: 0 0.0%

  • Total voters
    0
  • Poll closed .

Okay, little problem this go around with the contest. It seems that one of the contest participants somehow convinced fifteen+ friends to join the site today (all on 7/20/05) and vote for them to win in the poll.

What should we do about this?

Please vote above and we'll get this figured out.
Sorry for all this fishy business. Doesn't usually happen at Nanotank. :gos:

I have a Idea. Only allow those that were on this board say mid-way through to be able to vote. That way its fair. I think that you could figure this out pretty easy. Maybe not just a idea.

I wish I could put restrictions on members (such as post count, registration date, etc) but its just not possible with our poll system. I also don't have time to sort through all the voting members to weed out the bad apples.

I would prob. only let members who have say 30 posts vote in the contest but I can't set that up on phpbb.

I'm sorry to say, but I'd DQ him. With that being intentional, it's grossly unfair to all other participants.

I second that. Disqualification is in order, the guy cheated point in case.

As a opinion to get better results in the voting system, you can have only the admins vote. I saw that on another site. You post up, and then the admins get together and vote on which tank they believe is the best and they vote.

Another way I saw voting was, each person who votes would post up and say "I vote picture # 7" and so on and so on. IF you feel it will take extra time for you to count them up, I am sure Mike, Incysor, myself, Jennie, admins, can help you tally up the votes. On average we dont get flooded with votes, so it should be easy to count up. It's fair, everybody knows their vote went in, and there is a time stamp so you know when to stop counting in the votes once the contest has ended.

Also yes, voters should have at least 30 to 40 posts already in order to vote.

Well those are some of my ideas, if any more spring to mind, I'll post up some more later.

I sort of figured this is what happened. 11 votes in the first day. I don't think we've had 11 votes for any one person/photo during the entire course of a contest before. Kind of obvious if you ask me. I didn't mention it because I figured they 'technically' hadn't broken any rules.
Even if it was a crappy thing to do.

I'd say only folks that were members when the contest started and have a certain number of posts by that time should be allowed to vote. Same as submissions.

Just dumping the members stats into an excel spreadsheet will show you when the different members joined and how many posts each have. I assume there's some way that the poll sysem tracks the members names that have voted and how they voted in the background someplace. Just dump that into the spreadsheet as well, it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to sort the members who's votes shouldn't be counted.

I think DQ. I was sad to see that nw one really was voting for mine but me, my girlfriend said she would sign up so at least I could get another vote. I told her that isn't fair. I have a lot of college buddies that can do the same thing. I say DQ. Go with people that were atleast signed up before the contest.

Nanotank to me is a community of hobbyist, dedicated to helping each other in marine reefing. It also extends itself in keeping us informed on current events with our environment or just leisure in viewing wonderful pics by a broad range of active members that post on a daily basis.

I pride myself in being a member since last year and log on to this site many times per day, in hope of helping others with concerns or issues as well as finding solutions for myself.

Being that we are small in size, yet growing; we care about all questions on the board. We find time to answer or perhaps refer help to areas we don't know.

Nanotank, therefore is a place that I consider a point of reference for beginning to advanced reefing. What is to be expected in my opinion is the highest level of INTEGRITY AMONG ALL OF US HERE ON THE BOARD.

I wouldn't recommend this board to anyone if these standards were not met; I therefore thank Brian the admin of this board for keeping these standards.

Unfortunately someone on this board didn't uphold integrity but rather expressed by his actions an intent to win a contest unfairly.

Now if this contest were a popularity contest; his actions would have been seen as okay. However, this is not the case and denotes a level of dishonesty and manipulation on the contest.

When we compete in a contest, say horse racing or race cars, we have rules that govern honesty and allow a true winner to surface.

The member that broke this honesty, handicapped the rest of the players, simply not fair.

I apologize if I rambled too much, but this board means a lot to me and I just don't want it to become a mockery of how easy it is to win prizes and then leave as quickly as you came; non contributing member.

Sincerely,

Michael Guerrero

All I can say is I'm bummed about the whole thing - Dj you did an awesome job putting this thing together and getting such a wonderful prize for the winner. The tanks submitted were all great, and I really like seeing what others are doing (I guess thats why I like this forum so much). The only vote I had was my own (I guess I'm biassed - sorry) but the other tanks were all very nice in their own way and I would like to tell them they are doing a great job and thanks for keeping responsible husbandry (SP?) the foremost in this hobby.

Just wanted to say thank you for standing up and apologizing.

There are very few board that someone can say that they are proud to be on, this is one of them. Every one of the the participants that are entered into this contest have wonderful tanks, as members here on Nanotank we get to come together as a group and speak together in the outcome of this contest. Anyone could have done this, but choose not to, to keep it fair and honest. Again, thank you for standing up and admitting to a mistake.

In case I haven't stated it before, Thank You for putting your time and effort into making this an extra special contest!

Noone,

I want to also thank you for comming forward and admitting any wrong doing, I truly commend you for that...

If you take a look at your thread under pico, you will see that I complimented your tank. I was extremely impressed how clean everything looked; you did a really nice job of concealing all the wires...

I hope you can put this unfortunate incident behind you and realizie that we are all competitive and do sometimes make mistakes; we are humans.

However, those that admit to mistakes just become better people and I for one need to thank you again, becuase I was very bothered when all this happened.

I feel a sense of unity in all of us and hope to see your future threads here on this board.

Te deseo lo mejor con tu tanque y quiero que sepas que nadie es perfecto y veo que eres hombre para desculparte de lo que paso...

Sincerely,

Mike

noone, good for coming forward. Hopefully your friends will stick around and contribute to this site.
May we now start voting again? I know who i would like to vote for! It should be if you vote you need to explain who you voted for and why.

I have a small idea for the voting: borrowing from Leaffish, I think it would be nice to see who you voted for and why like mentioned, but take it up a notch.

To the candidates that enter a picture; we cannot vote for our ourselves, we most choose another.

This would add spice to the figures; and I personally want Incysor's vote, not to mention a small explanation of why he choose my pic, hehehehe...

Okay, so I'm being hopefull and a little goofy... :)

I definitely think a DQ is in order here. It was commendable that he admitted his mistake but still that is something that shouldn't be allowed. I say a new poll and the idea of not being able to vote for your own tank is pretty interesting.

On a side note I missed the deadline so I also move to allow me to send in pics of my tank for the new poll. JK I should have paid more attention to the date, and wouldn't stand a chance anyways. Some of the tanks in there are really nice.

Perhaps, in hindsite, all contest votes should only come from those registered the day before the announcement. As for the cheater...well that person will enter politics I'm sure. This person is no better than a thief.
