what is this?

Sorry no pic,

I've got something interesting growing in my sump. All of the sudden along the walls of my sump are these little white oblong fuzzy pill jobs with little straight hairs sticking out the end that's not attaching them. Anyone have any idea of what they are? They look like little cocoon/pods. I've got a two snails down there that went down the rabbit hole by accident when the poly bag wasn't attached.

I really need to clean the whole sump out as it's getting full of gunk. But these are new.

Those are more than likely Q-tip sponges, also called pineapple sponges. Be proud! It's a sign of a healthy system.

Hmmm...they're only in my sump, but could get sucked into the return pump to my tank. Should I keep 'em or just let things be? There's a ton of dirty floaty gunk in the bottom of my sump that I want to clean up, but these q-tip sponges are on the walls.

Leave the sponges be and just syphon out the gunk on the bottom with some airline tubing.
