What I Use

If anyone is ever looking to buy a cheap, fairly decent digicam for taking shots of their tank, try out the Fujifilm FinePix A205...it's what I do all my shooting with. It's pretty much an entry level cam, but it works rather well (at least, better than my older digicam...hadta hook it up through the COM port, and it was slower than molasses...) Here are some of the specs:

Effective Pixels: 2.0 million pixels (2.0 Megapixels)
CCD: 1/2.7-inch 2.11 million square pixels
Recorded Pixels: 1600 x 1200 (1.92 million) pixels max
File Format: Still image: JPEG (Exif. Ver. 2.2)/Movie: AVI (Motion JPEG)
Storage Media Card: xD-Picture Card
Number of Images/Recording Time on a 64MB Card: 101/6.6 min.
Lens: Fujinon 3x Optical Zoom Lens F3 to F4.8, equivalent to 36-108mm on a 35mm camera
Focus: Autofocus Normal: 80cm/2.6 ft. to infinity/Macro: Approx. 10cm-1.0m (3.9in. - 3.3ft)
Flash: Automatic, 3.5m/11.5 ft. (Max.)
LCD Monitor: 1.5-inch D-TFD (55,000 pixels)
Interface: Multiple Connecter (For USB or Cradle), Video Socket
Video Output: NTSC/PAL selectable
Power Source: 2 x AA Alkaline/Ni-MH battery or AC power adapter

I realize most of this info will be useless to all but most dedicated of camera geeks...but just in case there are some here, this Bud's for you

You know, you really can't go wrong. Combined with a decent editing program, like Photoshop, and a web publishing program, like Dreamweaver, a digicam is a wonderful tool for documenting the progression of a salt tank from beginning to end. Thank god for them, I say

I've got a Canon S400. It was expensive but it is small and does everything I could want. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

I'm leaning towards the s7000. I'm looking for mainly macro ability, and so far, thats the best i've found for the price.

Do any of those cams have vid options? That's one of my favorite parts of the canon. 3mins with sound, limited useability such as you can't zoom in and out and it sucks in low light, but for the most part that hasn't been a huge issue.

I've got an Olympus brio D-230 which is a total piece of crap although all the pics of my tanks were taken with it. Its 2.0 megapixel, has macro (which is decent) and even video. I'm on my 2 one now because I lost one on Bourbon St (imagine that)

Anyways, both of these I bought had been refurburished which was basically a huge mistake. I've had problems with both of them one of which Olympus wouldn't fix even though it was still under warranty. The biggest problem is that the Ni Mh rechargeable batteries which Olympus recommended last about 30 mins tops. Not sure if its just a refurbished issue they've had with these cameras but bottom line is don't make the mistake I made. Just buy your camera new.

I should be able to get the s7000 new for $400 (after rebate). 6MP with 12 MP interpolated. The reason why i like it is the macro ability and 6x optical zoom. Hopefully soon....

...

And here I thought I was just giving some information. Seems I'm out of my league when it comes to cameras and photo taking.

A year ago I researched digitals within my budget and came up with two top runners. The olympus 5050, and the nikon 5700. I did some further research on underwater housings for both cameras and ended up getting the 5050 because the UW housing which is actually made by olympus, was about $600 cheaper than the cheapest one I could find for the nikon.

This site was very helpful for me with reviews of cameras, housings, etc..
