Using a toothbrush???

Ok I'm getting read to start cycling my tank! I have some very nice cured LR - but I have been reading that you are supposed to scrub the LR with a toothbrush before putting it into the tank. Since I happen to like the colors and growth on the LR I am hesitant to scrub the rock . . . . so is it necessary to scrub it?

The only reason I can see to scrub your new LR would be if it was covered in hair algae or something pestering like that. If your rock looks to be free of that, I'd leave it alone (especially if its cured). You will loose tons of beneficial creatures by scrubbing your LR down.

It's not necessary, but will remove alot of the dead/dying material that would otherwise fall off in the tank. It won't remove any coraline alge or forams if that's what you're concerned about. Just brush it lightly with the toothbrush and swish it in a bucket of saltwater before placing it in the tank.
