Turtle Grass

Hi all

firstly, hope this is posted in the right forum, and sorry if it isnt.

More importantly, anyone had any experience with turtle grass o rmaiden hair plant? I heard so far that they like high flow and medium light but all unconfirmed reports.

Was thinking of having some in a pico/small nano (2-5gal) with just a filter for circulation, maybe a powerhead, about 25-35 watts. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks and cheers

I tried frags of it a couple times in my 55g. Never had any luck.

I think it needs really high flow....Much like SPS to keep other types of algae from growing on it and killing it.

i agree

my girlfriend owns maiden's hair, but it's having very bad trouble. I have two pumps in the JBJ. One upgraded pump, and one that is in compartment 1 blowing back in and no such luck!! Little by little getting browner and browner. My girl has had it since November, and it's slowly on it's way out, as it's lost a lot of it's hair :(

Yeah, in my experience maiden's hair is very hard to keep. I've yet to know anyone who has been successful long term with the stuff. Its a bummer b/c I really like how it looks.

I agree madiens hair is really nice algae. Of course if your still looking they have others like "ogo" or "tang's heaven", caleurpa (red grape looks nice, cheatomorpha (looks like green spaggethi), etc. All are great food for tangs and other algae eating fish (not sure about chaeto though) Also all are great homes for microfauna.

Hi and thanks for all the replies

fishcrazee, i'm not getting it to feed tangs (actually, i thought that tangs leave turtle grass alone). I just like the colour and texture. I'd get chaeto as a substitute but i'm gonna be in australia and we dont get that here (i think it's from the carribean).

Dunno if i should be evil and give it a try; despite knowing it'll surely die, just a question of time. But, come to think of it, maybe it requires high dissolved organic and nutrient levels (i'm convinced euphyllias and goni/alveos need it)

Well, what macro would you recomend that's hardy and prolific? i've had halimeda on my LR but it 'bleached' and just died. And i heard that caulerpa can do the same.

Any info guys?
